At least 12 killed in high-rise fire east of Paris

Spate of deadly blazes has prompted French crackdown on squatters

Updated: 10:40 p.m. ET Sept. 3, 2005

PARIS - A fire tore through a high-rise apartment building east of
Paris early Sunday, killing at least 12 people and injuring 16,
firefighters said.

The blaze, the fourth deadly fire in the Paris area since April, broke
out in the entrance hall of a 15-story housing project in the
Val-de-Marne region east of the capital, the local fire squad said.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but people had died from toxic smoke.

About 200 firefighters rushed to the scene after the fire began before
dawn in the town of L’Hay-les-Roses, and medical teams set up a mobile
treatment site.

At least nine people were seriously injured, said local fire brigade
spokesman Alain Antonini. Several were rushed to hospitals in the
area.

2. So sad, yet again...
What's disturbing is that these tragedies keep happening in poor/immigrant communities, and many of these people that are dying (including many children) may have never had a chance to get out alive.

3. Certainly eyebrows must be raised
and again the victims, dehumanized as 'squatters', are blamed.

5. Arson suspects held after 12 killed in apartment block blaze south of Pari
PARIS (AFP) - Twelve people, including two children, were killed and 35 injured, some of them seriously, after fire broke out in an apartment block in a southern Paris suburb overnight, according to the latest toll from firefighters.

It was the third major fire to hit the Paris area in 10 days, but officials said the latest fire was in no way similar to the other two, which involved squats.

Four people were arrested following the fire, police said Sunday, releasing no details on them.

Town mayor Patrick Sève said that witnesses described seeing youths set fire to letter boxes in the entrance hall of the building.
