GOP Agenda in Congress May Be at Risk
Katrina's Costs, High Fuel Prices Generate Pressure Against Further Tax Cuts

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, September 4, 2005; Page A04

Republican leaders intended to return to work with a dream agenda for small-government conservatives: permanent repeal of the estate tax, an extension of deep cuts to capital gains and dividend taxes, the first entitlement spending cuts in nearly a decade, and the advent of private investment accounts for Social Security.

But Congress and the White House are on the spot to respond to Hurricane Katrina's historic Gulf Coast destruction and skyrocketing gasoline prices, and the leadership is feeling pressure to set aside or jettison parts of that well-laid agenda.

The federal budget already is stretched by spending on the war in Iraq and a nearly $11 billion emergency hurricane relief package that was rushed through Congress late this week. GOP leaders will have to justify additional tax relief for upper-income people at a time of civil and economic crisis

27. Emphatically, unequivocally, YES
Any "Democrat" who supports Bush's agenda needs to be thrown over the side and replaced with someone, anyone who remembers what it means to work for the people.

14. But it's all in the wording
Look how they got all the OTHER cuts for the obscenely wealthy. They convinced people that it would affect them.

There will be a bill that says something along the lines of We have to cut taxes so the poor people who are now without a city can rebuild their lives.

Oh, and the millionaires need some dough too.

They will get away with it like they always do.

36. Yes, they made up the term "death tax."
"Estate tax" or "inheritance tax" just doesn't have a the ring that a demagogue needs to pass his/her wrong-headed agenda.

However, I'm not persuaded they will get away with this. It's obscene and openly stupid to repeal the estate tax when we're in deficit, supposedly at war (not that the administration has really made any effort there as far as I'm concerned; it's just line up the cannon fodder and hand out money to corporations). Who else is going to be working the phones with me, talking to members of Congress about this?

12. Scriptual reading for Fat Freepers
James 5
Rich Oppressors Will Be Judged

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries
that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted,
and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and
silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness
against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have
heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed the wages of
the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept
back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have
reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.5 You have
lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just.... kjv

asking for the same things he always has. He has not one foot in reality. Oh, he might throw a line, or two, about the hurrincane in there, if he has to, but I guarantee, he won't really want to talk about it. I think the MAJORITY of the Congress Ds and Rs need to go. They have failed this country miserably.

19. The Haves and the Have Mores that Bush call his base...
I call vampires, bleeding us until we die. I call them cannibals, killing us with their greed, and feasting on our misery. If more tax cuts are passed now, with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and another looming in Iran, any member of the Congress who votes for any kind of tax cuts is nothing but a ghoul. Remember the beautiful, great city of New Orleans? It is now rotting and abandoned by Bush and his thugs.

The people of New Orleans need immediate help. That will add billions more to the federal budget. Any sane president would rescind the tax cuts on the wealthy, withdraw from Iraq, and rebuild America. Unfortunately, we do not have a sane leader.

There is one other thing people need to consider. Until now, and rightly so, the attention has been on the ones who could not leave, and have had to be evacuated. There were many more who had cars, enough money, and enough gas to leave on their own. Like the ones who were forced to stay, they, too, will need housing, food, and jobs. They might have been lucky enough to have family members willing to take them in for awhile, or enough money to stay for awhile at motels, but unless they are rich, they no longer have jobs, and they, too, will soon be forced to seek charity.

This is a crisis which will affect all of us, in one way or another, for a long time to come. We can't blame the victims, they did not want to lose everything they own. To try to cut taxes now, though, after adding Katrina's costs to Iraq, and the deficit, is sheer criminality. I can only hope and pray that our Dems will discover that if they wish to keep on being elected, they need to develop spines, and start being the opposition party, and stop trying to outdo themselves in repackaging Republican ideas into DINO me-toos.

29. indeed... this would give * an opportunity to set straight
with the American people. he can admit he did wrong on the rescue/aid efforts in New Orleans, the economy is in bad shape, the sharp incline of unemployment on pre & post Katrina, a timetable for troop withdrawal, and halt all tax cuts to the wealthy.

Then he can propose to use the money from tax cuts in conjunction with a relief aid package. The money would go towards relief aid for those affected by the storm, and to hire individuals who have lost their jobs due to the storm, to help with cleanup efforts. This would prevent huge corporations receiving no bid contracts, money going straight into the economy and those in need, and would make the cleanup efforts go faster. I'm quite sure a black man who has lost his job, home, and a life in ruin, would take a job like that in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, this would give too much relief and happiness to the American people. It seems * enjoys seeing the American people live their lives in complete devastation and agony.

26. That wouldn't fix the real problem though.
As you must know, the real problem is the fat-rich oil companies spiking the prices with the blessing of thier GOP buddies whom they own. The problem is also that this country finally needing to get serious about fuel efficiency and alternative energy to get us the hell off this fossil fuel addiction that we have. Cutting the gas tax will be a minimal, temporary fix that will either just send us further into debt or shift the tax burden to something else. Also, what will it matter when gas breaks four bucks a gallon, or five, or six...? Train the fire at Bush, the GOP, and their fat-rich oil company cronies who are getting ever richer while WE THE PEOPLE get royally screwed. PUT YOUR ANGER, FRUSTRATION, AND ENERGY INTO GETTING RID OF THE GOP AT EVERY LEVEL AND IN EVERY OFFICE IN THE NEXT ELECTION CYCLES SO WE CAN FIX THE REAL PROBLEMS. THE TIME IS RIPE FOR A RETURN TO POPULIST ECONOMICS!
