WP: Bush Says Rehnquist's Death Is a 'Great Loss' (of a Racist comrade)
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 10:57 AM by Don1
The news part of this article is the half-staff part, not the death itself. Please do not merge this thread!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/04/AR2005090400547.html

"With the flag flying at half-staff over the White House in honor of Rehnquist, Bush noted that the chief justice's death creates the second opening on the Supreme Court, following the retirement announcement in July of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor"

The flag is at half-staff for Rehnquist who has a racist history, but not for New Orleans.

3. No.
We should send the National Guard to a big Rehnquist funeral where it is needed.

:grr:

10. Believe me.
His vision was already in action.

We have had virtual apartheid in this country for some time. Look at the people of New Orleans who are left to see what I mean.

We have had a virtual segregation in education, too. Look at the urban demographics and look at the urban schools to see what I mean. We can no longer wonder why they seek school vouchers for their privatized schools. We can no longer wonder why they passed No Child Left Behind and did not fund it.

We have had a virtual draft in the military, too. It is mostly the poor and the minorities who sign up to be enlisted. They choose it for a career to be a "self-made man," but it only rarely works. Meanwhile, their counterparts, sons of the corporate elite, go off to Ivy League schools for being legacies.

But, yes, the vision is much more visible now...now that we see martial law in New Orleans and the poor dying and resorting to all manner of inappropriateness to survive. Meanwhile, the right-wingers stand back in their palaces and call them animals.

on anyone either, but can't mourn such a man as Rehnquist. He was a segregationist. At one time he even tried to harass black voters. I was quite surprised to hear columnist and pundit Susan
Estrich heap such praise on Rehnquist saying he was not biased. He never changed, hating minorities to the end.

So now we're going to let the corrupt drunk who thought Mike Brown would make a dandy head of FEMA pick Supreme Court justices?

17. Bush needs to indicate he's speaking for himself.
What "Renchberg" did to the American people by helping to slip Bush into Al Gore's White House was evil.

I'm happy to see that they've already relegated Rehnquist halfway down their front page, with no photo of him:

Then dump it an outhouse pit.

24. Or better still...
Give him a small graveplot. One as small as my grandmother got from her last social security check that we had to fight to get. Then, put him in a mostly African American cemetery. His soul will live in torture for eternity.

Rehnquist's Death Puts Stevens in Charge

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 4, 2005

Filed at 9:32 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The death of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist leaves the court's oldest member, 85-year-old liberal Justice John Paul Stevens, temporarily in charge.

The court operates on a strict seniority system, meaning that whenever the chief justice is absent the justice with the most years on the court takes over. Stevens, named to the high court by President Ford in 1975, also filled in for Rehnquist when the chief justice was absent from the bench for several months after announcing his cancer diagnosis last October.

Being chief justice, or acting as chief justice, means presiding during oral arguments, running the court's weekly meetings, assigning the writing of decisions and generally keeping the paperwork running smoothly. It is primarily an administrative job, but each chief justice also puts an ideological stamp on the court he leads.
