Times slams NBC's censoring of West:-

The Los Angeles Times Sunday criticized NBC for censoring rapper Kanye West's criticism of President Bush during A Concert for Hurricane Relief.

NBC cut the Grammy Award-winning rapper's remark: George Bush doesn't care about black people, from the West Coast tape of its Friday night telethon leaving the viewers with nothing more than a sterile, self-serving corporate broadcast, the Times said.

The network issued a statement defending its action, saying: It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion.

West's most scathing criticism -- a charge the government had given the National Guard permission to to down and shoot us -- was left in the taped broadcast, the Times noted.

1. No matter - CNN replayed his comments repeatedly
I'm sure many on the west coast have heard all his comments.

"There's the possibility of more unscripted passion breaking through this week as NBC and the other networks, along with PBS, join forces Friday for another special. BET will air a separate benefit the same night. And the MTV networks will present a special Saturday."

I thought the most interesting words Kayne used were "my people" and "hypocrite." And just as his crossover dreams were starting, too.

9. What do you expect from him?
Most of those dying and starving were black people and those in Washington who let them die were not. I looked at those pictures and I felt just as bad about the whites, Vietnamese and others as I did about African Americans. But most of those who died and suffered and who continue to suffer are my people, meaning people of my race, black people. I am sure West had sympathy for all who suffered, but he like most of America looked at a sea of suffering and it was mostly a sea of black faces. If people cannot understand how West felt, well that's most unfortunate.

I don't think white Americans can understand just how deeply hurt blacks feel watching food and water being thrown to people wading in filthy water, with them scrambling to catch the food, with blacks living on the sidewalk in filth, with the media focusing much on looters instead of showing why such things might occur under such circumstances. It looked to me a black person, that those blacks were considered not much than animals, forced to beg for food and water. Someone said it reminds her of the accounts of slavery, with the slaves knee deep in water, trying to tend tobacco and rice fields. I know I will never get over this episode. Just seemed liked there are people in power who really believe that blacks are trash, they are expendable.

10. OMG Tomee
it kills me to read what you wrote; so devastating.....I saw Mr. West speak live (I had honestly never heard of him) - his remarks struck me as genuine and deeply from the heart - he looked anguished by what he had seen....I'm glad he spoke out, someone needed to say it
