Rice defends Bush's Katrina response in visit to Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended President Bush on Sunday against charges that the government's sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina showed racial insensitivity.

"Nobody, especially the president, would have left people unattended on the basis of race," the administration's highest-ranking black said as she toured damaged parts of her native Alabama.

Some black lawmakers, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other black leaders have complained bitterly about the slow response to the disaster, whose victims have been disproportionately black and poor, particularly in New Orleans. They have said racial injustice was a factor in the government's slow relief effort.

"I just hope that when people stop and think about it, they will just see that that's just not the case," Rice said. "How can that be the case? Americans don't want to see Americans suffer."

30. It makes one wonder how *isolated* this inner circle is from REALITY?
I wonder if the Bush Administration truly know how MUCH they are despised around the world? Their lies are not even playing with the Sheeple of the USA as they did after 9-11. No matter how HARD Faux pounds in the patriotic blather and the other networks obediently fall in line with "dear leader", the AMERICAN PEOPLE are beginning to wake up and *demand* accountability.

Think about it = No ONE within the Bush Administration has *ever* taken the blame or has been held accountable for egregious mistakes as well as blatant incompetence.

Why? The American People want answers, NOT SPIN.

31. Yeah, and this from the infamous 'personal responsibility' party.
Which really means, blame everybody for everything else all the time, while you rape the treasury of the United States.

I remember a cartoon of Nixon during his final days in office, when he was shown hiding behind his desk, with a 'The Buck Stops Here' sign in front - and a very messy, handwritten 'T' in front of 'Here', with an arrow drawn to the side. Somebody should resurrect that one and show Bush in the same position.

32. nah, they just weren't members of his "base:" the haves and have mores.
But while you were trying on your Ferragamos, Condi, the rest of the world was seeing a whole lot of black folk (and white folk too) trying to hold on to life without food or water or meds for DAYS...while the Bushies said, oh we're on it you betcha (before, during and after the hurricane) and nothing was done and others apparently were prevented from helping.

Was it on Thursday/Friday Brown or another politcal hack appointee said "we only respond in 24 hours to an emergency...we didn't know until today..." The whole world knew for DAYS.

Bushco left our fellow Americans unattended for days because your administration just didn't care enough to act. These folks don't go to Bushco fund raisers and if and when they're allowed to vote they likely vote the "wrong" way. They're just not y'alls "base."

It's still amazing though that they were left for days since no doubt there were pregnant women with unborn fetuses there and possibly some folks in irreversible comas. And we all know how quick Bushco is to rush to their aid, being part of the "culture of life" and all that.

Condoleezza Rice has no right to make claims about anything when she was busy buying shoes and watching broadway plays when the hurricane hit.

Sorry, Shrub. Putting out one of your black cronies will not alleviate the suffering of the overwhelmingly African American victims of this storm.

It's finally over. Your photo-ops and lip service will no longer be affective. The majority of Americans FINALLY see through this administration.

"Probability High that Hurricane Katrina will Cause Levees to Collapse" or something like that.

But it wasn't definite so a wait and see posture was determined to best way to deal with the information. Plus of course there was little historical data. Just a little flooding in what was it, 1995?

But nobody imagined a little flooding in a city 9 feet below the sea level would be a real problem.

50. Rice Defends Bush Against Racism Charges
Rice Defends Bush Against Racism Charges

Monday September 5, 2005 3:31 AM

By LARA JAKES JORDAN

Associated Press Writer

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended President Bush on Sunday against charges that the government's sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina showed racial insensitivity.

<>

``The Lord is going to come on time - if we just wait,'' she said.

It was a sort of homecoming for Rice, an Alabama native and granddaughter of a Presbyterian minister.

Her visit came as some black leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, have complained bitterly about the slow response to the disaster, whose victims have been disproportionately black and poor. They have said racial injustice was a factor in the government's slow relief effort.

56. I listened to Nate Clay's radio program last night
He told a little story about Ms. Rice's attitude on the Civil Rights movement. It was her assertion that the white people of Birmingham, where she grew up, were changing their racist ways already and Dr. King didn't have to start a huge movement for civil rights.

When she was a little girl, her mother was not allowed to try on dresses in the clothing stores as black people were not permitted. But one time her mother raised a fuss and the saleswoman allowed her to try on a dress in a storage room. This was one example Ms. Rice gave to show that the white people of Alabama were changing towards blacks.

61. Uncle Condi meet..........................
Uncle Tom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This article is about the racial term; for the P.G. Wodehouse character, see Tom Travers.

Uncle Tom is a pejorative term for a black person who is obsequiously servile to white authority; eager to win the approval of white people; or, who rubber stamps; or, who rubber stamp white supremacist notions about the inherent superority of whites and its corollary, the inherent inferiority of blacks. "Uncle Toms" are perceived to take the side of whites when there is an injustice against blacks. The term Uncle Tom comes from the title character of white author Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.

The book's Uncle Tom demonstrates an honorable grace and dignity, his story of suffering being similar to that of Job, from the Bible. Tom pities Simon Legree, for his enslavement to his wickedness; despite his wealth. He is poor in spirit in comparison to faithful, old Tom. Most blacks, however, object to Tom's passivity, willing subservience and complete lack of outrage at his enslavement, and to Stowe's paternalism in the portrayal of the loyal, patient, long-suffering Tom. They view the author's prose as patronizing, condescending, stereotypical, and emasculating. The depiction of Tom in the popular stage version of the novel also was greatly influential in popular perception of Tom as a servile, white-haired, shuffling slave who was grateful to his master.

Essentially, the accusation of being an Uncle Tom or tomming questions the accused person's integrity, or courage, or both. The implication is that the person is demeaning him- or herself, or acting against the interests of blacks, generally, for their own personal benefit, out of fear, or simply because they have been brainwashed to be complicit in their own oppression. A "tom" can be someone judged to be insufficiently outraged by, or inadequately engaged in opposition against, a status quo of white privilege and power and black disadvantage. Sometimes, the term is applied to individuals who simply are perceived as being unnecessarily accommodating of whites.

During slavery, tomming could be a cunning subterfuge. White masters often gave well-liked and trusted slaves coveted, less physically demanding duties to perform. "Faithful" bondsmen and women also tended to be watched less closely, allowing them opportunities to escape to freedom or engage in clandestine acts of defiance. A tomming fieldhand who had been bullwhipped might set a field afire or destroy farm implements. An outwardly compliant cook whose husband or children had been sold away from her might burn down the cookhouse or exact a slow and agonizing death from her master by poisoning his food with finely ground glass or other harmful substances

62. This is not a defense, this is offense.
They know the "race card" being used so blatantly plays very poorly to the majority of voters. Thats just the kind of thing to create a backlash in Bush's favor. Im sure the Kayne West incident helped as well. This is something thats better left for people to decide for themselves, without it being thrown in their faces.

Kayne West was wrong about the "black people loot/white people find food" too, that story has been debunked by Snopes.com.

And that was not the only example of the implication that it was only Blacks "looting."

68. I assumed he was referring to the incident involving Yahoo.
It had several threads going about it here on DU, and was also covered by alot of blogs, including Atrios, DailyKos, Boing Boing, etc.... It wasn't as it appeared though, it was two different photogs with two different perspectives, and it turns out the captions actually were correct:

64. Racism? Oh no, honey, it's not racism you have to defend.
It's genocide.

Have you broken in those new shoes, honey?

She has to replace the ones that burst into flames from all her lying.

73. She's one lady with ice water in her veins
Truly nasty. She saw comedies and shopped while the Gulf Coast was in abject horror. Not a nice woman.

71. Condi hasn't been black since she was 4 years old
Why would Bush use someone like her to try to make his point?

Can anyone guess Bush's response to a hurricane with devastation of this magnitude if it would have hit Martha's Vineyard?

75. Of course he wouldn't let people suffer based on their race . . .
He lets them suffer based on income.

Once again, Condi speaks the truth selectively.

77. wow, she really cocked this one up.she actually put the idea into people's
heads... by denying that the president would have left people unattended on the basis of race, she introduced thi deal to people who may not have considered that strongly before. she's basically announcing to the world that there's a large group of people who believe the president DID ignore the NOLA disaster until it was too late BECAUSE of race... thereby giving credibility to the idea itself!

who wrote this speech for her? was it a rove thing? has he basically lost his edge? nothing is helping, rove. stop trying to help the president and start trying to help the suffering people of NOLA.

80. She's right: Americans don't want to see Americans suffer.
Which brings up the obvious question: then of what ilk is boosh* and his administration?
