NEW ORLEANS - Police shot eight people carrying guns (!?!) on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six of them, a deputy chief said.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said the shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which connects Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

25. MSN: Police had been firing in air to turn refugees from bridge
http://moneycentral.msn.com/inc/news/providerredir.asp?feed=FT&Date=20050904&ID=5084629
'Both the Superdome and the Conference Center, where refugees were most concentrated, are situated close to the elevated highways that are the city's lifelines to the outside. Crowds even made their way up to the highways and started to cross the main bridge across the giant Mississippi but were turned back by police firing in the air.'

19. if a light denim-jacket-clad Brazilian electrician...
...can be morphed into Pakistani religious fanatic al Qaeda operative with a suicide bomb under his big, heavy parka, then Lord only knows what we're bound to be told about the people on the bridge.

Remember, the first press reports about the electrician from Brazil made him out to be a nervous Pakistani in a heavy coat who had run from police -- who had had no choice but to shoot him dead. Eye witnesses were interviewed, and they confirmed all that.

Too bad for the police that the security cameras were rolling:

  • The man they shot was from Brazil, not Pakistan or the Mideast.

  • He was not a Moslem extremist -- or a Moslem of any kind.

  • He was not wearing a "heavy parka". He was wearing a light denim jacket.

  • He did not run from police.

  • His demeanor was calm and unsuspicious.

Both the police -- and their supposed eyewitness, whose remarks were duly printed up in the press -- were full of shit.

So yeah, we should follow the bridge shooting incident. It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

they were shot simply for refusing to
turn over their weapons to police.
If this is so, we're bound to see more

18. I thought everyone had been evacuated. Someone posted about the power
grab for Louisiana by Bush in the Washington Post article, why would they need to declare Martial Law and need all those ambulances and things if everyone is gone.

They kept the Red Cross out just like Fallujah so there would be no independent witnesses and are sending a message to the journalists that they can be shot just like the ones who have been targeted by Bush's elite SS in Iraq.

This is so horrible. When will Fitzgerald send in the Federal Marshalls or the Pentagon Flag Officers send in troops to remove Bush/Cheney forcibly from office.

How can we help? I think we can help by calling for Impeachment again and again to the media and Congress, they and we are in danger whether we do anything or not. Freedom's just another word for nothin left to lose.

Don't forget the March on Washington Sept. 24 ANSWER.com has more information and flyers to download.

Doctors Hamstrung in Relief Efforts
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer
30 minutes ago

BATON ROUGE, La. - Volunteer physicians are pouring in to care for the sick, but red tape is keeping hundreds of others from caring for Hurricane Katrina survivors while health problems escalate.

Among the doctors stymied from helping out are 100 surgeons and paramedics in a state-of-the-art mobile hospital marooned in rural Mississippi.

"The bell was rung, the e-mails were sent off. ...We all got off work and deployed," said one of the frustrated surgeons, Dr. Preston "Chip" Rich of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"We have tried so hard to do the right thing. It took us 30 hours to get here," he said.

That government officials can't straighten out the mess and get them assigned to a relief effort now that they're just a few miles away "is just mind-boggling," he said.

While the doctors wait, the first predictable signs of disease from contaminated water began to emerge on Saturday: A Mississippi shelter was closed after 20 residents got sick with dysentery, probably from drinking contaminated water.

~~~~~~Petition sent automatically sent to Bush and your reps:
Tell Bush & Congress:
Accept Cuba's offer to
send doctors to the
hurricane victims!
VoteNoWar.org has set up an easy-to-use way to send Bush and Congress a message. Use the link below to tell them: "Accept Cuba's offer to send doctors to the hurricane victims!"
On the evening of September 2, Cuban President Fidel Castro reiterated Cuba's offer (first made on August 30) to send doctors and medical equipment to provide desperately-needed assistance to those who have become the victims of both Hurricane Katrina and of the Bush administration's meager and dilatory response.
Specifically, Cuba is offering to send 1,100 medical doctors with 26.4 tons of medications and diagnosis kits at no expense to the U.S. (they will even bring their own food and water). There is now a dire need for medical attention in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and in other Southern states. The Cuban doctors, nurses and professional healthcare staff are world renowned for their medical expertise and their ability to provide assistance even in the most difficult conditions, and have traveled throughout the Americas and the world providing care to those in need. The people of Cuba, even with far less resources than the United States, have survived extreme hurricanes and flooding because the government mobilizes to put people first, evacuating hundreds of thousands and providing necessary food, water and medical care immediately.
These doctors and the medicine and equipment stand ready to fly to Houston and can arrive within hours as soon as they get permission - permission that thus far has not been given by the U.S. government. In their public statements about countries that have offered assistance, the Bush administration has not even acknowledged this offer from Cuba.
Bush's racist and cavalier conduct towards the dying and suffering in New Orleans has been criminal. For him to withhold this medical support from people in need is cruel and outrageous. He will let even more people die needlessly just to support his right-wing political agenda against Cuba.
http://www.nbc30.com/news/4887230/detail.html
Spokesman: Engineers Shot By New Orleans Police
NEW ORLEANS -- Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said.
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.
The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps.
Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people ("carrying guns," LOL!), killing five or six. The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
60. This is easy to figure out.
NOPD report they have shot at some people on a bridge.
ACoE report they were shot at on the same bridge.
The media runs a story about the NOPD shooting at the ACoE.
The truth (apparently) is that the NOPD shot at some people who were shooting at the ACoE.
The only people who were incorrect was the media for making a false assumption. I really don't see anything inconsistent other than the media's reporting. No one else has changed their story, just clarified it to fix the media error.
