AP: 5 Contractors NOT Killed on New Orleans Bridge (Army Corp Engineers)
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 05:33 PM by RamboLiberal
Breaking headline has changed

AP: Army Corps of Engineers says its contractors were not killed by police, but gunmen who fired at them were killed. More soon.

http://www.cnn.com/

Blame CNN and AP for getting it wrong - these were original headlines and story. Again the contractors were NOT killed but the gunmen.

On their Breaking News Headline Web:

AP: Army Corps of Engineers says police killed some of its workers as they crossed a bridge on the way to repair a canal. More soon

http://www.cnn.com/

On edit adding AP Link and Story:

Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.

The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps.

Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

20. And add lack of sleep - that can really screw up a person
This has to be the mother of all FUBARS! Right now I think they need to stand down the New Orleans Police and have more refreshed troops take over. Or at least pair the police with troops.

How in the hell did this happen in broad daylight! One could almost understand at night - but in daylight! These guys are tired, stressed and apparently trigger-happy!

6. These things happen when there are no clear rules of engagement
Who is in command down there? One would thing that Homeland Security would be in command of the entire situation.

Many people died on 9/11 because of failure to communicate to the people inside the North Tower that it was leaning and that they needed to evacuate. Looks like nothing has changed!

11. Many people died on 9/11 because of failure to communicate
I started a thread trying to get DU'ers to grasp this very important point.

It's been FOUR YEARS.

The ONE thing that was obvious and essential was the need to fix the damn communications.

won't... so many people are PMing me and I am struggling to put things in order here... food, place to stay, bills... I am OK right now. Please help the folks still in Orleans Parish.. My brother just heard JP Sheriff Harry Lee say that his deputies caught FEMA agents trying to cut the phone lines in Jefferson Parish.

Why would they do that?

Why?

24. Sometimes I Think That Worse Is Better
Things have to get worse, so that the sheep will revolt at last. "Experience is a dear teacher, but some will learn no other way."

You cannot acquire experience by making experiments. You cannot create experience. You must undergo it.
Albert Camus (1913 - 1960)

Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.
Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963), "Texts and Pretexts", 1932

Experience teaches only the teachable.
Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963)

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment.
Barry LePatner

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
Douglas Adams (1952 - 2001), "Last Chance to See"

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962)

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Franklin P. Jones

Experience teaches slowly and at the cost of mistakes.
James A. Froude (1818 - 1894)

Men are wise in proportion, not to their experience, but to their capacity for experience.
James Boswell (1740 - 1795), Life of Samuel Johnson, 1791

Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.
Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), Lady Windermere's Fan, 1892, Act III

By far the best proof is experience.
Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)

Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.

I thought there was something weird about this story. I thought the Superdome and the covention center area had been cleared of civilians--why would people be roaming around toting guns? Well, here's our answer. Guess New Orleans will have to change its name to New Baghdad.

21. Typical of Bush's "cowboy" mentality
Every time I think this situation can't get any worse, it does. This is the same "commander in chief" that said we don't need aid from abroad, we'll do it ourselves, we're just fine. Shoot to kill orders don't belong in a place like NO - I'd ask if he could fuck this up any more, but I'm afraid he could and I don't want to tempt fate!

33. Trickle down recklessness.
I think it's safe to say that the careless Bushmonkey in the White House is the roll model that people look up to. This country had gone crazy with Tazers, guns, careless behavior.

If Wes Clark were running this ship, it would be tight. Instead we have anything goes.

Where do we go from here? I say this government should start reevaluating things very quickly. This president needs to go. But first we need civility in New Orleans. Someone who can lead needs to take charge.
Am I full of shit?

the gunmen shoot at the engineers and miss and the police who just happen to be on the scene shot and killed the five or six gunmen who couldn't shoot straight.

What could be fishy with this story?

per the local scanner this afternoon Residents in one neighborhood were refusing to be rescued..they were yelling to the rescuers "Power to the people, we are NOT leaving". There were no more tranmissions about the confrontation.

Will these people get shot if they don't cooperate?? And will we ever hear about it?
