Soldiers warned again about Internet postings

WASHINGTON - During World War II, the biggest operational security fear was gossip. Posters warned ``Loose lips sink ships.'' Today the leaders worry about an Army in which virtually every soldier has a digital camera and easy access to the Internet.

For the second time in a year, Army leaders have sent a strong warning to all commanders that soldiers are continuing to post sensitive information on Web sites that ``the enemy reads and exploits'' for use against U.S. forces.

The August memo was headlined ``Chief of Staff of the Army OPSEC (Operational Security) Guidance.'' In it, Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker demanded that everyone Army-wide do a better job of training soldiers and policing operational security violations that ``needlessly place lives at risk and degrade the effectiveness of our operations.''

<snip>

Schoomaker added that Army headquarters and G-2 also would begin to track and report on a quarterly basis ``open source OPSEC violations.'' He wrote that within 30 days, the Army would publish changes to its operational security regulations that deal with Internet postings of sensitive photos and material.

1. I have no problem with soldiers getting disciplined for giving away
secrets or talking about what went wrong with an operation.. it makes sense that the commanders wouldn't want that info out floating around..

however, if they are just trying to censor soldiers from complaining about how fucked up iraq is and how they want to go home.. then i don't see how that's a threat to security in any way at all..

2. I disagree. All complaints are a threat to security,
George Walker Bush's security.

3. You are almost there
Move this part to the front of your thinking (or maybe just statement)

however, if they are just trying to censor soldiers from complaining about how fucked up iraq is and how they want to go home.. then i don't see how that's a threat to security in any way at all..

and you might probably have a clue on what these pigs running our government and military are really thinking. Also please excuse me for being interjecting but the track record of them charlatans, crooks and swindlers is going to soon dictate we all cut to the chase.

12. I recently read my letters home from Vietnam........
If it was illegal to squawk about USMC life in those days, I'd still be in Portsmouth Navel Prison!

13. Like the USCMJ has enough regs to make breathing a violation
The word will get out if not directly through some filter. We are now on the same road the soviets were on twenty-five years ago. The bureaucrats needed all the secrecy there because they knew however they did it that it would be wrong. The remnants of what was once this great country is left with only the appendages that take away from others so it can survive. This country or least the ones who hold the levers is really only a heartless shell with no real function or purpose other than keeping well to do, well to do.

When it's more important for a country to keep things from ITS OWN citizens than the rest of the world, then you know something wrong

16. No shit. I wonder how they even hope to function
with everyone with internet access and such.

How can they possibly keep ship movements secret?

17. Since so many logistical support services are contracted
...it is friken impossible, frankly. Most of the husbanding is civilian contracted, the garbage scows, the "hotel" items (foodstuffs), and in some ports the fuel as well. The guards at many ports are civilian, some contracted, and the MWR tours in foreign ports are often local national contractors, too.

Everyone knows when the ship is due back except the wives, was the old saying--now, I guess the PC update is everyone knows except the spouses!

Frankly, though, if anyone wants to blog, I would advise snail mailing the entries and having someone in CIVLANT make them for you. Why? The internet access points at military bases and aboard ships are US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY and use thereof constitutes CONSENT TO MONITORING--and service personnel KNOW this. Same with phones on military bases--there is NO privacy assumed.

They don't have a leg to stand on if they are accessing the net from a military facility...

them having Internet access altogether.

Anyone know any good military blogs to get an idea what our troops are thinking?

I haven't recieved an e-mail in about two weeks now.

He doesn't write about .."the mission"...
He just talks about conditions, the weather,
his need for BOOKS and DVD's and CD's and SOCKS!
And some games....

oh...and he tells me he misses home and he
loves us and can't WAIT to be back in the states!

PEACE!

7. Even depicting the mood of troops is a security risk.
Letting others know what our people react to and how they react is a security problem.

I wouldn't want my troops posting weblogs.

It also could lead to dissension within the ranks. I've read a few where they trash their colleagues. You just can't have that.

10. They mean posting stuff that makes Bush look bad.
Lord knows no one is allowed to do anything except worship the anti-Christ. Can't have those military guys who actually have ethics exposing the truth about Der Fuehrer.

It's too late. You can't put the genie back into the bottle.
