Venezuela's Citgo Sets Up Hurricane Relief Centers, Country Plans 1 Million Barrel Gasoline Donation

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corp. has set up disaster relief centers in Texas and Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and has begun providing humanitarian aid to thousands of American victims, an official said Monday.

Volunteers at Citgo refineries in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Corpus Christi, Texas, are providing medical care, food and water to a total of about 5,000 people, Venezuela emergency management director Col. Antonio Rivero told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, volunteers from the company's Houston headquarters have provided similar help to some 40,000 victims, Rivero said. snip

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered to send the gasoline plus US$5 million (euro4 million) in disaster aid and a team of 200 humanitarian workers drawn from a special force of soldiers, firefighters and other specialists.

At the same time, he has sharply criticized the U.S. government for failing to evacuate the victims before disaster struck.

American politics is so corrupt that many Americans find it unfathomable that there are leaders in other countries who are totally altruistic in their motives.

Perhaps it is racism that prevents white Americans from seeing the better virtues in people of color! Chavez is of mixed race, his opponents are European descendants. Bush likes the Chavez opposition because they look more like him!

I mean, it kind of makes me grin at the very idea of him exporting socialism, and to the United States, no less.

I am sure he does care about helping people, but he has to also be enjoying an opportunity to one up Dubya.

My, I never knew you were such an important person but it now seems that many poor Americans may be relying on your to assist them with their heating needs this winter. I am hopeful that this kind assistance of yours will not impact on the cost of heating oil offered by some other smaller companies in the US who transport and deliver oil. Is it possible to come to an agreement about the price for such deliveries?
