Burning Man participants donate food
September 8, 2005

RENO -- Unused food and bottled water from the Burning Man counterculture festival is being stockpiled for hurricane evacuees arriving this week in Nevada.

Burning Man celebrators began donating items to the relief effort near the end of last week's festival in the Black Rock Desert, about 100 miles north of Reno. Others dropped off items as they departed Sunday and Monday.

"We started to see a groundswell of support. People were giving and giving and giving," said Tom Clark, a representative of Black Rock City LLC, which stages the festival.

Also, Burning Man officials annually gather food and water for the crew that remains on site to clean up after the festival.

BM folks are like that...wonderful that they found time to contribute to relief as they head out.

7. Yup.
So if you see an emergency structure built out of electrical conduit, PVC, and discarded AOL CDs, topped by a giant animated eyeball, you'll know where it came from. :)

10. I was referring to...
...the well-developed ability of burners to construct solid, weatherproof temporary structures out of nearly any available material, and make said structures available to anyone in need. And then put blinky lights on top of it. :)

13. My Burner friends learned of the hurricane only when they left Black Rock
Imagine hearing about that as you drive back toward "civilization".

I've had a few similar experiences while travelling abroad. It can be quite a jolt.

Imagine returning from BM in time for 9/11
I was thinking some people might have been blissfully unaware at Black Rock while this transpired, as I might wish I was.

For those that don't know -- Burning Man is like Mecca for us.
