GOP leaders slam Dems over harsh Katrina criticism

WHITE HOUSE G-O-P leaders are firing back after attacks on President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist says the attacks "go over the line."

And House Speaker Dennis Hastert says there's a huge recovery job ahead, and politicians can -- in his words -- "either join in" or "stand aside and criticize."

...

They were reacting to Democratic calls for the president to fire his emergency chief, Michael Brown -- and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi's charge that Bush is "oblivious" and "in denial."

Hastert says Democrats are playing politics with the disaster, and distracting from the relief effort. Frist says the American people will dismiss criticism that's not "constructive."

74. It'd be good to call Capitol Hill tomorrow - TOLL FREE (877) 762-8762
and call out these republi-CON assholes. Like hastert should talk - after he openly and publicly stated that maybe New Orleans should just be bulldozed and forgotten. FUCK him. You can dish it out, assholes, but you can't take it, can you? How's it feel taking the heat now?

Also, make sure you call Pelosi's office and give her a resounding "attagirl!" FINALLY she's saying what needs to be said, and I hope she doesn't back down.

PLEASE do this guys.

I'm going to do it again tomorrow morning after the kids leave for school.

22. I hope to hell the Dems don't fold
How is it "constructive" to ignore the blatantly obvious failures of the response to Katrina? My father gave me this same reasoning - "now is not the time." If not now, when? Later, when the memories have softened and the gop has managed to come up with a smooth game plan to deflect criticism? No, we have to keep hammering them NOW.

God, I hope the Dems don't fold - sometimes, we're just too damn polite.

If a dem administration had appointed a 'horse judge' the head of fema, there'd be hell to pay. As far as I'm concerned frist should be down there using his medical training and hastert, well hastert can just shut up and stay away, there's already too much sewage floating around N.O.

26. going over the line is this administration not being held accountable
for this atrocious act of incompetence. We looked the other way when the towers went down and 3000 people died, we looked the other way when no WMD were found and bush joked around with his elitist friends about it, we looked the other way when bush squandered the surplus, we looked the other way when he wouldn't go under oath for 9/11 and ignoring "Osma determined to strike," briefings, we looked the other way when bush has taken more vacation days than any president in history, we looked the other way when he wouldn't fire Rove for outing a CIA operative, we looked the other way when he cheated in the debates, we looked the other way when he tried to take away our future and social security, and NOW we have stopped looking the other way and they call it going over the line?

Bill Frist should be fired as well!

37. My message to Frist
Mr. Frist I am so outraged by your comments about the criticism that Bush and this administration are receiving and richly deserve. Mr. Frist I am shaking I am so angry with you. Your comment about the "attacks being over the line" is disgraceful. You should be ashamed! See, Mr. Frist the President of the United States failed to act like a President during this crisis and more than that, he failed to act like a HUMAN! This colossal failure is the responsibility of the Federal Government. Bush murdered Americans, his negligence, his failure caused Americans to die needlessly from lack of water and medical care. It's obvious to everyone but Bush and his allies. God only knows how you people are denying and justifying this complete and utter failure. Furthermore, your comment about "you can join us or stand aside and criticize" is equally pathetic. The American people can (and are) responding and criticizing we can do both at the same time. Your comment pits people against each other at a time when we don't need that. Your public comments are deplorable.Accountablility is coming Mr. Frist and the American people are bringing it. THIS FEDERAL FAILURE IS INEXCUSEABLE! PERIOD!

an institution's ability to carry out its function. You put function-nots in all sorts of high level governance positions. And then you wait for them to be diminished so crisis will be worse and corporations will look good in comparison.

How many other government agencies have purposely incompetent leadership?

The Democratic President that gets elected in 2008, is going to have it so easy, because

During a national disaster, most conservatives are not going to finger-point or play the blame game, or god help us, hold our elected and appointed officials accountable, they are going to STFU
If, during a major national disaster, the Democratic President plays with a guitar and cracks moronic jokes, the Vice President disappears, senior cabinet members go to Broadway shows, shop for shoes, and go to Baseball games, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If, during a major national disaster, the Democratic President continues to stay on vacation, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If the Federal response after a disaster is slow and people die because if it, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If, when informed of a major terrorist attack, the Democratic President just sits and stares blankly for seven minutes, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If this President gets us into a war based on lies and then runs it poorly, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If a major terrorist attack occurs, and the leader of that attack of it is not captured, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If there are runaway deficits and the President never vetoes a spending bill, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If gas prices are 3 or more dollars per gallon, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If a top administration official purposely outs a Covert CIA agent, most conservatives are going to STFU.
If the Democratic President appoints political cronies for important positions that exceed their credentials or experience, most conservatives are going to STFU.

The one exception? If the Democratic President has consensual sex in the Oval office and lies about it due to embarrassment, then they won’t STFU.

60. They slam US for crossing the line? LOL!
Pot, kettle? Hello?

Crossing the line is when the president asks "what went wrong" with regard to New Orleans, as if nothing has. Crossing the line is when they try and pass legal fines for people who couldn't afford to evacuate. Crossing the line is having a frickin' laid-off horse judge in charge of disaster areas.

61. Playing politics---you've got to be kidding!!!
The White House's main excuse---that the locals didn't tell us what to do---is a grim joke. Dennis Hstert is making the situation worse than it has to be by "playing politics"!

65. Dems have not be critical enough. The only one standing up and
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 03:58 PM by applegrove
really yelling is Pelosi. They got her in a room, scared the hell out of her with a demonstration of reckless indifference & lying(which is scary) and now she is off and running. Suits the GOP well since the Democrats really had stood down and stayed quiet in order to not let this be turned into "just politics".

When cornered, a sociopath will provoke psychic trauma in a victim and then get others to watch that trauma in order to label the person "nuts".

In this case, they got Pelosi to start to criticize - vocally. Now they have the one Dem who really is being critical. That was missing all last week for the WH.

They scared the hell out of her, denied it, and now they use her anger & fear to paint the whole situation as "political". She was shaking when she came out of that meeting with Bush. Absolutely shacking.

So now the WH gets to "call" the dems on their criticism, when in actuality, there has been very, very little said by the Democrats.

67. line? what line?
Their actions, inactions, lies, greed, cronyism, looting and inhumanity long before Katrina erased any lines. This latest disaster turned catastrophe just made it clear that the lines were gone, time to hold up the mirror without caring if they like what they see.

81. Hastert says *Democrats* are playing politics with the disaster?!
This from the man (cockroach, actually) who questioned whether New Orleans should be rebuilt, then received the fax from Rove and within 24 hours was on his soapbox braying, "I will not rest until the historic city is rebuilt"?

Better stock up on the No-Doz, Denny, because thanks largely to your heroic efforts in cutting funds for levee maintenace, emergency management and so forth, it's gonna be months rather than weeks.

for any implication that criticism of a president who sits on his ass while american children died of thirst ON TV!!!! is undeserved.

These people murdured the people of New Orleans as surely as if they had locked them in a shipping container with the same supplies. They were held in impromptu concentration camps AT GUNPOINT!!!

Blaming the Democrats for blaming the prez? You know what Jon Stewart said: People who say they don't want to play the "blame game" are usually those who are to blame.
