NATO to scramble ships, planes for Katrina aid

BRUSSELS, Sept 9 (Reuters) - NATO chiefs gave the order on Friday for alliance ships and aircraft to help deliver European aid to hundreds of thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina after concerns that some help was not getting through.
An emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels agreed to a request for transport help made by the United States to the alliance on Thursday, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told reporters.
At least two ships are to be sent with total capacity of 6,000 cubic metres -- approximately the same as 500 long trucks.
