National Guard Stretched Thin
(AP) The National Guard is stretched so thin by simultaneous assignments in Iraq and the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast that leaders in statehouses and Congress say it is time to reconsider how the force is used.

Republicans and Democrats alike worry about the service's ability to balance its federal and state missions of fighting wars and responding to domestic crises.

1. One disaster/terrorist attack away from a draft
which I'm sure they'll dress up as "national service", or the "patriot corps", or something like that.

4. Montana Gov.Brian Schweitzer has been screaming bloody murder
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 02:42 PM by brentspeak
about having his state's National Guard stuck in Iraq. The state of Montana is susceptible to devastating forest fires, and every hand is needed to put those blazes out. Schweitzer has threatened to find a way to recall his troops, and I hope he does.
