GE to cut 1,000 jobs in New York, South Carolina

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) _ GE Power Systems said Tuesday it will cut 400 jobs over the next six to nine months from its turbine production facility here due to a decline in domestic demand for power generation equipment.

The Atlanta-based company, a primary business unit of the General Electric Co., also will lay off 600 workers from its Greenville, S.C., plant.

"As expected, the ramp-down of our turbine shipments is continuing after several years of unprecedented demand in the U.S.," said Mark Little, vice president of the company's Energy Products division.

Didn't we just have a blackout recently? Hmm...maybe that was grid-related and not generator-related, but still...shouldn't we be modernizing the whole system?

The monthly jobs report has been averaging around -400,000 per month for the last few years. Supposedly, -300,000 per month or better is the point at which the economy may be improving. I don't understand that, if +150,000 is needed to keep up with population.

Must be "they" think -300,000 represents the point that a recession turns around and starts getting better? In any case, I don't think the payroll number will dip below
-300,000 during Bush's presidency.
