Mugabe accuses US of racism during Katrina
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has accused the United States of deliberately neglecting homeless black victims of Hurricane Katrina while condemning him for demolishing urban slums.

Mr Mugabe also told the UN General Assembly that former colonial ruler Britain, which inspired European diplomatic sanctions against Zimbabwe, was equally as hypocritical by participating in an "illegal" and "devastating" invasion of Iraq.

"These imperialist countries have unashamedly abused the power of the media by hypocritically portraying themselves as philanthropists and international saviours of victims of various calamities," Mr Mugabe said.

"They have remained silent about the shocking circumstances of obvious state neglect surrounding the tragic Gulf Coast, where a whole community of mainly non-whites was deliberately abandoned to the ravages of Hurricane Katrina as sacrificial lambs," he told the assembly.

1. As Bush so eloquently put it " Who cares what (he) think(s)?"
I think Bush is the worst President ever.. but between him and Mugabe give me GWB any day. Btw, Mugabe is more racist and absolutely more homophobic than George W Bush. It is not even worth comparing the two of them on those points, Mugabe is off the scale compared to Bush.

3. The only information about Mugabe comes
from the very biased western press. I have no doubt that Mugabe is not a good man but many of today's rulers are no better than he is. People hate Mugabe because of his land reform movement which has returned stolen land to the people. For years white farmers owned most of the best land in the country while the peasants lived in poverty. Britain has reneged on its promise to pay for the land and wants to blame Mugabe for much of the problem the British governments helped to create.

5. My judgments are based on information/press reports from
African newspapers not American or European. I don't buy your thinly veiled apologist post for Mugabe. "Mugabe is not a good man, but" (LOL, cough cough) an understatement if there ever was one!!

7. There are plenty heads of state
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 05:14 PM by Tomee450
that are just as bad or worse than Mugabe. I also read extensively and I find that most of the criticism of Mugabe comes from the western press, particularly Britain. The hatred of Mugabe is solely because of his reform which dispossessed many white farmers of stolen land. Western countries supported Mugabe for years as long as he played ball. There was very little outrage as long as a small group of farmers controlled most of the valuable land. Now that Mugabe is acting contrary to the wishes of his former friends, he is suddenly a villain. The British government could have avoided the current situation had it followed through on its promises.

8. You're sticking up for Mugabe?
Come on now.

Returned stolen land to the people.

Yeah like his wife. She tours the country, picks out her new home and kindly asks the white family who had owned it for 100 years to kindly remove themselves so she could live there for free.

Yeah, a disposessed peasant no doubt. Maybe between her shopping sprees in Switzerland.

9. Oh please
What government isn't corrupt. The truth is, they all are. Mugabe behaves just like many heads of state;he enriches himself, his family, and his friends. That's wrong but it's common. As long as Mugabe did the bidding of his former friends, he was perfectly acceptable and they did not mind that he was corrupt. However, once he started throwing the white farmers off stolen land and redistributing it, suddenly he became the worse person on the earth. That's the truth of the matter which some people refuse to acknowledge.

10. You should not depend only on the western Press. Real freedom
loving Africans have been sounding alarm bells about Mugabe a year after he came into power- I am talking about Newspapers I read in college in the very early 80s- not stuff we have been hearing in the last 3 years.

13. I don't depend on the western
press. In fact I don't believe half of what I read in that media when the issue concerns Africa and African Americans. After all, European countries colonized Africa and stole much of its resources. After leaving, many of those same countries installed puppets who continued to do the bidding of their former colonial masters. Those so called freedom loving Africans of which you speak, have often been people who wished to resume the former relationship with the colonizers and enrich themselves. This is the opinion that many held of Mugabe's opponents in the last election. I know of Mugabe's faults. My point is that many rulers have those same fault yet are not vilified. Mugabe too, had the support of the western governments as long as he acted in accord with their wishes. Once he stopped doing that, he no longer was to be tolerated. I will never say that Mugabe is a saint. Clearly he is far from being that. I simply state the truth, that is, he is now loathed only because he has forced white farmers from the land. His critics conveniently forget the many, many years that those same farmers enriched themselves at the expense of most of the population.
