Rep. John Hostettler says he voted against Katrina relief efforts because of possible fraud, waste

By Peter Ciancone/Tribune-Star

Rep. John Hostettler made his first trip to Terre Haute's Light House Mission on Monday, touring the facility and trying to reassure its directors that federal money through a new program of faith-based and community initiatives would not interfere with the delivery of the mission's Christian message.

... In a news conference, Hostettler fielded questions about the mission. He also was questioned about his Sept. 8 vote against sending $52 billion in emergency relief funds to Katrina victims.

"No congressman or senator is showing compassion by sending tax dollars down to Katrina ," Hostettler said. He called it "compulsion."

... Hostettler was asked how he could approve more than $200 billion for the war in Iraq without asking for the same accountability. He said some of the same congressmen who complained about the war, but voted in favor of giving the president power to send in troops, are now complaining about the funds used to fight it.

"If it had been up to me, we would not have been over there in the first place," he said. Hostettler voted against sending troops. But now that they're there, he said, he does vote in favor of sending them what they need to finish the job.

1. What an asshole. So the victims should be on their own?
by the way, can we glean anything from the fact that the Light House Mission CEO's name is Tim Fagg?
(not trying to be offensive, but that's weird. Wonder if he gets teased by his Christian brethren?)

2. If he's that concerned about fraud and waste...
That's what they have AMENDMENTS for, for crying out loud.

He could have very well inserted language into the bill, that would have put safeguards in place to prevent fraude and waste.

DUH!

5. These rw bastards are crazy and are taking a wild ass stand
particularly in light of the open checkbook they are providing to the people of Iraq, who by the way, have never paid a nickle in taxes to this government.

6. How refreshing. Twisting in the wind rather than outright spin.
Of course when the tornadoes hit Indiana, he will do more than twisting and spinning. He will be backpedaling.

8. Truth Starting to Peek Out.....
It is getting harder and harder for these cheney/bush sycophants to hide their stink from ALL of us. Could it be that the truth is finally beginning to sink in ( no thanks to Big Media )?
We have to believe that the truth will prevail - otherwise we might go nuts as our country goes down the drain.

"Rep. "So, Congressman, are we STILL gonna be able to say 'If you wanna sandwich or a cot for the night, we wanna hear the Sinner's Prayer' like we used to do before you got us all this tax money?"

"Yea, verily, and you can refuse help to wimmen with breast cancer, too, because they killed their precious widdle bay-bees...I saw the study! Wimmen who get abortions get struck by GAWD with cancer in their titties!"

15. This Bozo is the same guy...
that insulted a group of breast cancer survivors in his office by saying that he thought there is so much breast cancer because God is punishing women for having abortions. Also he was stopped at an airport in Kentucky for trying to go through security with a gun.
