Katrina survivor dies days after rescue from New Orleans home
LOS ANGELES - A 74-year-old survivor of Hurricane Katrina who was trapped in a New Orleans home for nearly two weeks has died of complications related to dehydration and malnutrition, the California National Guard reported Monday.

Edgar Hollingsworth, an Army veteran of the Korean War, died Saturday at a New Orleans area hospital, Air Force Capt. Brenda Hendrickson of the California National Guard told The Associated Press by phone from Louisiana. He had been found four days earlier buried under a pile of rubble.

21. he won't be
i haven't seen my friend who died in the evacuation counted

haven't seen a list of names at all but the parish he died & buried in has reported zero fatalities so i know he ain't on it

i think if you get out even for a few hrs you won't be counted

those who died on the scene will add up to quite a huge toll as it is

11. FEMA is not allowing rescuers to break into homes! that's why.
In the past few days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has ordered searchers not to break into homes. They are supposed to look in through a window and knock on the door. If no one cries out for help, they are supposed to move on. If they see a body, they are supposed to log the address and move on.

7. How horrible. To have done so much for one's nation and then been
deserted by its pretzeldent in his time of need. I'm only thankful that he didn't die alone.

9. Truly horrible and saddening.
So bush has now killed another member of the armed forces, but one from the Korean War. I fear he will destroy America before it awakens and destroys him. RIP Old Soldier, you deserved better than this.

...so call us animal lovers 'crazy', if you like. We can't help it. I completely grok where Mr Hollingsworth was coming from.

13. Orders not to enter houses.
"The Federal Emergency Management Agency had issued orders to rescue workers not to enter Katrina-ravaged homes unless they heard the cries of survivors. However, a National Guard team disobeyed orders after seeing Hollingsworth's foot protruding from the rubble of a home."

So, will they be allowed to enter homes to search for the dead?

Is this how the death toll is to be lowered? "Send out your dead!"
But no one came out so we bulldozed the house?

Where is the outrage?

Wat

16. The young man who defied orders
and did break into his house, will be pallbearer. Saved him from dying alone.

"At the request of his wife, Lillian, military personnel and other authorities who helped rescue him will serve as pallbearers, along with his son, Wesley, the California National Guard said in a statement."

22. Thats so sad, at least he is being honored with a military funeral.
<snip>
Hollingsworth is scheduled to be buried at 2 p.m. Tuesday with military honors at the Port Hudson National Cemetery, 10 miles north of Baton Rouge.

At the request of his wife, Lillian, military personnel and other authorities who helped rescue him will serve as pallbearers, along with his son, Wesley, the California National Guard said in a statement.
