WASHINGTON, 22 October 2003 — Early in President Bush’s recent public relations campaign to rebuild support for the US war effort in Iraq, Vice President Cheney appeared on “Meet the Press.” Attempting to make the case that the US was winning in Iraq, Cheney made the following observations

One of the questions it asked is: ‘If you could have any model for the kind of government you’d like to have’ — and they were given five choices — ‘which would it be?’ The US wins hands down. If you want to ask them do they want an Islamic government established, by 2:1 margins they say no, including the Shiite population

But the AEI’s “spin” and the vice president’s use of their “spin” created a faulty impression of the poll’s results and, therefore, of the attitudes of the Iraqi people.

. Twenty-three percent of Iraqis say that they would like to model their new government after the US; 17.5 percent would like their model to be Saudi Arabia; 12 percent say Syria, 7 percent say Egypt and 37 percent say “none of the above.” That’s hardly “winning hands down.”

I also think someone posted this earlier.

My husband and I have just found out the our grandson, who is currently in Iraq, has requested that his father purchase body armor for him. He does not have any (along with many other soldiers) and does not feel safe going on missions without it. His father spent $900.00 and has shipped it overseas to his only son. What do the families do that cannot afford this kind of money?
What have we gotten into to? Why and at what cost do we stay?

We have gotten into a quagmire, and an unnecessary one at that. We should not stay. We should admit out mistake, beg for forgiveness, pull out, and let the UN try and help Iraq build anew. Anything built under the guidance of the CPA will not be for the benefit of the Iraqis, but for the benefit of Haliburton, et. al.

20 years ago, after the first Reagan tax cuts, parents in even some middle class systems had to begin buying their children's textbooks, since the schools lacked money to buy them.

Here in the suburb I work in, they are having charity events to fund equipment for the fire department. Of course this suburb votes reliably Republican.

Now parents are having to buy body armor for their children in the army, since apparently the tax cuts for the rich preclude us from properly equipping our troops.

When are we going to have to start chipping in to buy tanks?

Better yet, when will people realize that Republican tax cuts cost the middle clases more than they benefit?

And may your grandson return safely home.

It is simply unconscionable that this country, soddened with a $350BB defense budget, can't afford to equip our soldiers with body and cannot provide immediate/longterm care for our vets.

The party of AWOLer's and chickenhawking war-profiteers totally disgusts me.....

...so the whole board can see this.

should hear that story. It's heart-wrenching and really points out the poor planning and lack of care for our soldiers on the part of this unelected administration. It would be highly beneficial for all Americans for you to write to your congresspeople and tell them this story. You should write it as a letter to the editor of your local paper as well as the largest national ones. It seems like the kind of story that every editor would feel compelled to print, and it might save countless lives in the long run.

Please consider it.

And in the meantime, Halliburton is padding their contracts by the tens of millions--while our troops are put in this mess unprotected. This is appalling. I hope for your grandson's safe return. This really rips me up inside.
