(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is the top presidential contender for GOP supporters in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 31 per cent of Republican voters would prefer Giuliani as the party’s nominee in 2008.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 28 per cent, followed by current state secretary Condoleezza Rice with 19 per cent. 12 per cent of respondents would support other contenders or are undecided.

Giuliani garnered national and international attention in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2000, McCain won seven Republican presidential primaries in the U.S., but retired from the race after eventual nominee George W. Bush became the frontrunner.

Rice is the second woman—after Madeleine Albright—and the second African-American—after Colin Powell—to serve as state secretary. She previously acted as the White House’s national security advisor during U.S. president George W. Bush’s first term in office.

Rice is not electable: too tainted with Iraq. The Mayor, on the other hand, will be a challenge.

And the more we have of Bushco the more we yearn for the Clinton years. '08 might be just the time for Gore.

And truth be told, between our republican senator (Hagel) and our democratic loser of a senator (Ben Nelson), I can stomach Hagel a lot easier. But I would never vote for him.

the massive munitions dumps in Iraq at Al Quaa qua (spelling?), you know the munitions that were stolen and probably account for all the attacks subsequently against those same US soldiers. In reality they were following Rumsferatu's orders to march straight to the oil fields to guard them That was a fine Rudi moment, caught on tape. Also we might want to ask why Rudy said 'Thank God George Bush is President', and why his communications told people to go back into the towers, back to their desks before the towers fell. These little hitches might prove somewhat problematic for ol' Rudy.

That's why I hope the freepers go for this guy....

Not a chance Ghouliani will get the neocon nod. The fundies are easily-manipulated, but they will never go for Rudy.

He'll do as well as other New York pro-choicers once the primaries start.

Maybe he can ask President Rockefeller and President Lindsey the best way to do it.

He's pro-choice, supports same-sex marriage, and is divorced and remarried.

If he can receive, but Dems can't, it just goes to show the denial-of-communion thing has little to do with canon law and a lot to do with politics.

He was rather disliked and at the end of his term; in fact, that day was the primary election in which he couldn't run. Playing the moment well, he is now a national figure.
