Parents want to abort Bill Bennett's $3,000,000 contract
this is going to cost Bill some of his gambling money. People are going to start thinking "KKK12 Inc."

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/12790202.htm

Philadelphia parents and education activists are demanding that the city school district end the $3 million contract it awarded in April to K12 Inc., in light of controversial remarks the company's board chairman made this week about aborting black babies.

<snip>

"I find it hard to see any explanation for why they're here in Philadelphia educating many of the black children Mr. Bennett clearly finds it provocative to call expendable," said Helen Gym, a mother of a district third-grader.

"I am very rarely struck speechless anymore. However, I could not get words out of my mouth this morning when I realized that my school district is somehow providing support to this company," said Ellayne Bender, mother of a district 11th-grader.

"On a moral level, as a human being," Bender added, "I would like to see the contract voided."

Last fall, Bennett publicly touted district schools CEO Paul Vallas as a good candidate to become the next U.S. Secretary of Education. Last night, however, Vallas stepped away from the man with whom he had been cordial.

"I read his comments, and his comments are outrageous and offensive to all of us," Vallas said of Bennett. "We do not have a relationship with Bill Bennett. Our contract is with K12, who are doing an excellent job in our schools. In my opinion, any extension of the contract could be jeopardized by his continued presence on the board."

Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA) Scheduled to Open Fall 2003, Will Offer K-7 Courses for Children Across the State; Families Have Until February 21to Enroll in WIVA

MCLEAN, VA -- Bill Bennett, editor of "The Book of Virtues," and former U.S. Secretary of Education, today unveiled a new virtual alternative in public education for families in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Virtual Academy (WIVA) is a new public education program blending traditional academic content with innovative technology. WIVA, which will offer courses to children from across Wisconsin in grades K-7 beginning in September 2003, is a virtual charter school chartered by the Northern Ozaukee School District, in Fredonia, WI. Bennett serves as Chairman of K12 Inc. (K12) an education company that will provide WIVA with a world-class academic curriculum.

Due to the requirement of Wisconsin's Open Enrollment Law, students who may wish to enroll in WIVA must complete an application by February 21, 2003. Submitting an application only secures an option to enroll in WIVA in September 2003, it does not commit a student to attending WIVA.

"This new public education program will broaden access to an excellent education and foster greater parental involvement in education," said Bennett. "The Wisconsin Virtual Academy will feature a self-paced, customized curriculum that benefits students of all abilities, support and guidance from certified Wisconsin teachers, and a safe learning environment where character education can be an essential part of the academic program. We congratulate the Northern Ozaukee School District for its leadership in creating this 21st-century public school that combines the best of modern technology, an exceptional curriculum, and research-based teaching methods."

<snip>

"This new program of virtual learning provides a unique and exciting public school option for any student in Wisconsin, regardless of where they live," said Bill Harbron, Interim Superintendent of the Northern Ozaukee School District. "As a public school program, the Wisconsin Virtual Academy has built-in accountability in addition to the outstanding academic curriculum provided by Bill Bennett's team at K12. The Northern Ozaukkee School District is both proud and honored to be a part of this project."

<snip>

K12 Inc. (K12) is an education company led by Bill Bennett, the former U.S. Secretary of Education, editor of The Book of Virtues and author of The Educated Child. K12 is building a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum and learning program. We work with educators and parents across the nation, blending traditional content with innovative technology. K12 is not a school; it is a company that provides a research-based curriculum, innovative instructional tools, and top-quality school management services to schools across America. K12 also serves homeschooling families by making a portion of its curriculum available for direct purchase by consumers.

<snip>

Bill Bennett is scheduled to attend a Parent Information Session on Tuesday evening, February 18, in Milwaukee. A final schedule of all the WIVA Parent Information Sessions will be released early next week.

Parents can call 1-866-512-2273 (toll free), or visit www.wivcs.org for additional information.

look at the cute little potential future looter that Bill Bennett has so graciously allowed to live, despite the obvious risks.

10. omg! he's "black" - he should be
aborted before he becomes a criminal!

(being Bennett)

Yes, I am being sarcastic :sarcasm: , but I do not know that Bennett was being sarcastic. Those were his remarks - I do not subscribe to that weird hateful ideology.

4. I think Bennett miscalculated
In my opinion his gaffe was a deliberate effort to be provocative. He hasn't been getting his porcine face on TV much anymore since revelations of his gambling habit and rumors of his strange sexual preferences became public knowledge. He was relegated to a crappy radio show in a lousy time slot with a dwindling listener base. He had to do something to get his name in front of the public but without pissing off his looney tunes audience. What does he care if some blacks and dems are raising hell about his remarks. They weren't gonna listen to him anyway. And now all the wackos think he's cool for advocating black genocide. And oreilly and hannity and all the other kooks will have him on again and he'll get even more publicity for his stoopid show. And maybe everybody will forget he likes to be tied up and spanked by women in black leather undies. But what he didn't count on was that schools that had done business with him would be appalled by his remarks and cancel his contracts.

I hope this is the first of a long list of cancellations. I also hope he winds up in prison with a large angry African American cellmate but that's probably too much to hope for.

9. I think he just didn't realize non-neocons were listening
same with Pat Robertson.

These people have been saying these things for years, and their listeners have been right there with them, but MediaMatters.org wasn't there to shine a light on it.

13. This is probably another attempt to draw our attention
from what is happening in congress and the white house. Both him and pattie robertson have poked their ugly brains up lately - since the American people have started to wake up. They are trying to draw the fire from bushie and his cronies.

11. Wouldn't Republicans mandate a 'retroactive' contract voiding?
I know Democrats tend to not take such unreasonable courses of action, but isn't that what Republicans would do?

20. Someone needs to take that $3 mil and give it to those black babies...
...he wish to have aborted. This is ridiculous.

Can you imagine being a little black kid in the Philly school district and some idiot tells you you're a natural born criminal while your tax dollars pays him a $3 mil contract? That's devastating. Kids everywhere should be protesting this.

23. This is a LE$$ON in dealing with Republican outrageousness--MONEY is the
only thing that counts with them, and that could change their behavior.

What other school systems are linked to Bennett and his enterprises? What public, religious, private, or charter schools pay him for advice? Have parents with children in those schools organized to demand that ties with Bennett shall be cut?

What corporate boards does Bennett sit on? Who are the corporation's customers? How do they feel about what Bennett said?

Does Bennett manage, control, or advise any projects funded with foundation grants? How do the funders feel about what he said?

Does Bennett get any grant money from the Pioneer Fund, which has decades of history funding eugenics projects and research?

26. PAVCS.org - PA Virtual Charter School uses K12
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 10:07 AM by October
We are a liberal family who homeschools because of our daughter's commitment to ballet...and also my son's various time-consuming interests.

The PA Virtual Charter School (PAVCS.org) uses K12.

I already wrote to them asking that they call for Bennett's termination.

I'm outraged.

Edited to fix "subject" line.
