Rep. Capito Won't Challenge Senator Byrd

Rep. Capito Won't Challenge Senator Byrd

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A congresswoman widely considered to be the GOP's strongest candidate to unseat Sen. Robert C. Byrd in 2006 announced Monday she will not challenge the Senate's oldest member.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, daughter of former three-term Republican Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr., said she plans to seek a fourth term in the House of Representatives instead.

``I took a lot of time with this decision,'' Capito told the Charleston Daily Mail. ``My best future right now is to ask voters to send me back to my seat in Congress. I feel I've been very effective there, and there's more to be done.''

...

The Republican Party has made unseating Byrd a top priority. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has already aired television ads questioning whether he remains in step with voters.

2. The Republicans need a big name candidate. Perhaps they could
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:40 AM by Benhurst
persuade JANINE TURNER to run, offering a dry-eyed alternative to nation's problems.

CLINT BLACK, with his silly hat, already looks the part of a cartoon moonshiner, although that might not really go over in West Virginia.

And then there is always PATRICIA HEATON, who, after spending years in America's most boring sitcom, might find her constituents and their problems funny in a way Ray Romero never was.

The possibilities are limitless. As shown by the potential candidates already mentioned, it's obvious the Republicans have a corner on the artistic community.

4.  Will Byrd run unopposed?
What are the chances the RNC could throw someone else at him? Any ideas as to who that might be?

6. Bush's pick to topple Sen. Robert Byrd chickens out
West Virginia GOP Rep. Shelley Moore Capito announced Monday she will not challenge U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd in 2006.
The 2nd District congresswoman said she will seek a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"If circumstances were to change and the environment were to change, then people might say they want to see me in a different role,'' Capito said.

"But I took a lot of time with this decision. My best future right now is to ask voters to send me back to my seat in Congress. I feel I've been very effective there, and there's more to be done.''

Byrd announced last week he would seek a record ninth term in the Senate. The 87-year-old Democrat said he was "ready to go another round.'' Capito, the 51-year-old daughter of former congressman and three-term GOP governor Arch A. Moore Jr., was viewed as the Republicans' best hope of unseating Byrd next year.

13. Um, maybe because she couldn't win
I don't know why the GOP thought they could defeat Byrd. People in WV like him and won't vote him out.

14. It's hardly a secret that Smelly Shelly is waiting for the next round of
senatorial elections because Byrd would have it in a landslide. Her only hope for a senate seat is to sit tight and wait it out. Unfortunately, the dems have few strong choices to run against *her* congressional seat and we need to out her for the corruption and anti-consumer, anti-labor corporatist she is. We can do much better than this in WV.

15. Capito’s decision dims GOP hopes
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2005100324

With U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito’s announcement Monday that she won’t run for the U.S. Senate, the Republican Party will have to scramble to seriously challenge incumbent Sen. Robert C. Byrd, according to a national political analyst.

“The Republicans do not have another good option in West Virginia,” said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.

“It would have been difficult enough for Capito to defeat Sen. Byrd. It will be enormously problematic for any other Republican to do so, assuming Sen. Byrd’s health will remain strong. He can look forward to another six-year term in the Senate,” Sabato said.

Hoeven won't challenge Conrad
October 2, 2005 GOV1002
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Republican Gov. John Hoeven, who was considered the GOP's strongest candidate to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad, said Friday that he won't enter the 2006 Senate race.

The two-term governor said he and his wife decided against a Senate bid to give the GOP time to recruit another candidate.

"We're very focused on serving as governor and First Lady, and we think the state is making real progress," Hoeven said.

Conrad, who has held the seat since 1986, had said he was not worried about a challenge from Hoeven. But last month he began a television campaign ad touting his work on energy and his role in helping the Grand Forks Air Force Base survive a round of military base closings.

Yay, Senator Conrad!

21. Hmm, it seems that the Bush poll numbers are a drag on senate and
house candidates in all but the reddest states. Not to mention DeLay and Fristy. This could get to be fun.
