Former judge Roy Moore to run for Alabama governor
No links yet, it was just announced on local TV here in Huntsville.

He plans to run as a Republican candidate.

7. The current gov is Bob Riley
who, as ultra conservatives with fundie leanings go, isn't bad. If memory serves, he attempted to raise taxes to help the state's poor, and was widely attacked by conservatives, including so called Christian Conservatives. This is all I recall, perhaps an Alabaman can weigh in with specifics?

16. I remember The Daily Show did a piece on that
I believe Jon Stewart's opening line for the bit was "facing either a modest and very necessary tax increase or the complete annihilation of their state government, the people of Alabama chose... the complete annihilation of their state government."

29. Yep
He's a conservative. We have a serious problem with money in this State...especially education funding. Our constitution is a wreck, and hampers the way money is spent...I won't go into specifics.

Anyway, the previous Dem governor, Don Siegleman, attempted to discuss raising property taxes but that got nowhere. He tried to get a lottery passed but it failed. So, Riley comes in and realizes, "Damn...we don't have any money". So he attempts to push through a tax bill that wasn't very bad actually. Many Dems supported it, because we understand that the damn state needs money!

The far right screamed and gnashed their collective teeth. There were actually bumper stickers that said, "Bush giveth, Riley taketh away". Fucking idiots.

So, for the past four years, Riley has been hated by many in his party for doing that...or trying to do that.

SO here comes Roy Moore. He very well could beat Riley in the primaries. If the Dem nomination is uncontested, you may see a lot of crossover primary voters to insure that crazy Roy isn't the nominee for the Republicans. The problem is that at least two high profile Dems will be running: The current Lt. Gov., Lucy Baxley, and the old Governor, Don Siegleman.

If you like good old fashioned political fights and suspense, stay tuned this season for Alabama's gubernatorial race!

Has he shaken the baggage that brought him down? Does he have a decent chance? Who is this other Dem Candidate, the Lt Governor?

35. He is running
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 01:36 PM by Stuckinthebush
Funny thing, I ate dinner next to him two weekends ago just by coincidence. I almost leaned over and asked him about his intentions, but I didn't want to bother the guy.

Anyway, I think he has shaken off most of the baggage, but he will still be seen as damaged goods by many Dems. Lucy Baxley has a hell of a war chest and very thick political ties. She can also appeal to crossover voters.

Let me give you an illustration of her popularity:

On I-65 from Montgomery to Birmingham, there is a farm on the right side of the road that has a huge billboard that has been there for years. The billboard has a picture of the devil...pitchfork and all...and says, "Go to Church or the Devil will Get You!"

Everyone knows this billboard because it has been around forever. Once you go past the billboard on up about 200 yards is a water wheel that faces the highway. It is a wheel that is run by a lake spill pipe, so you can see the whole side as you drive up to it. For the past 5 years, the wheel has had Bush campaign signs on it spinning around.

A few months ago as I was driving back to Birmingham, I noticed that the Go to church billboard had been changed to a Lucy Baxley billboard, and the Bush signs on the water wheel had changed as well.

Folks, that is huge. So, if Lucy can already get the Go to Church dude, then she will have immense crossover appeal.

I bet that she wins the nomination and is up against Roy Moore. Lucy Baxley will win and will be the next Alabama Governor.

I figured he would run, and I figure he will win, too.

As such, I'm moving to a different state if that all comes to pass. He's a complete nut job. With Roy Moore as gov., we can look forward to round-the-clock state-wide mandated prayer vigils in leau of evacuations and preparedness drills for the next hurricane in the Gulf.

Seriously, we are the worst of the 50.

12. Best news of the day! I would LOVE for Roy Moore to become the face of
the Republican party. Put him next to Dubya, give him a microphone and some reporters and "bring it on".

Betcha Lucy Baxley beats him though. 2006 will NOT be a good Republican year and I expect enough Alabamians will be embarrassed by his campaign to give it to her.

Course I've been wrong before.

The man who lost his job as Alabama chief justice in a Ten Commandments controversy is running for governor.

Roy Moore became a hero to the Christian right when he refused to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the courthouse.

He announced today that he'll run for governor next year.

22. Ousted Ala. Justice to Run for Governor (Roy Moore)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051003/ap_on_el_gu/ten_commandments_judge

GADSDEN, Ala. - Roy Moore, who became a hero to the religious right after being ousted as Alabama's chief justice for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, announced Monday that he is running for governor in 2006.

Moore's candidacy could set up a showdown with Gov. Bob Riley, a fellow Republican, and turn the Ten Commandments dispute into a central campaign issue in this Bible Belt state.

Two Democrats, Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley and former Gov. Don Siegelman, are already running. The Republican and Democratic primaries are June 6.

Moore, 58, said that if elected, he has no plans to relocate the Ten Commandments monument from its new home at a church in Gadsden.

"But I'll tell you what I will do. I will defend the right of every citizen of this state — including judges, coaches, teachers, city, county and state officials — to acknowledge God as the sovereign source of law, liberty and government," he said.

Wow, it must be SO tough to be a member of the majority religion in the country. I feel for you, Mr. Moore. :sarcasm:

28. Make no mistake about it...
Alabama will vote for Moore by an overwhelming margin. Alabama is the most regressive, fundamentalist state in the country and they deserve him as governor. My only hope is that fundamentalists and other right-wing nutjobs will move to Alabama so that we can get them out of other states.

32. And you base this assertion on exactly what evidence?
I am a native of Alabama and can tell you that Moore is a highly polarizing figure there. People who like him like him a lot, but those who are not on his side loathe him. Many conservatives consider him a demagogue using religion for political advantage. Republican insiders hate him for the difficult position his grandstanding put their party in.

He might win, of course, but it's hardly assured. We can be fairly sure, though, that this primary challenge will soften up Bob Riley, which can only help Lucy Baxley.

And frankly, no one from Louisiana has any right to complain about any other place being regressive and fundamentalist. Outside New Orleans, Louisiana is backwoods fundamentalist heaven.

37. STOP ROY NOW
Hi everyone. I used to have an account at DU long ago, but I forgot the details and lost access to my email, so I had to create a new name. If anyone would like to copy the following text to a new thread, it would be great. Otherwise, I'll do so myself after making a few more posts.

Dear DU Members,

I am writing on behalf of the Campaign to Stop Roy Moore, headquartered at http://stoproy.com

As you may know, Roy Moore recently announced his intentions to run for governor of Alabama. It is the belief of this grassroots campaign that American progressives across the nation must come together to vigorously oppose Roy Moore's candidacy. If Roy Moore is elected in Alabama, what is to stop him from setting his sights on the White House?

The fact is, unless we come together with one voice to show America that we are fiercely opposed to the theocratic aspirations of Roy Moore and his supporters, it can (and quite possibly will) happen. Enough is enough. Roy Moore was ejected from the bench for his refusal to honor the Constitution of the United States. Is the the type of man we want to see taking the oath to "protect and defend" that same constitution? Surely, even "George Bush's America" can do better. We need to say "NO" from day one, and we need to stand firm.

Please join us today in our efforts to honor the oath taken by by every American president and upheld by every American citizen of good conscience. Help us "protect and defend" the U.S. Constitution from the ultra-conservative theocracy envisioned by candidates like Roy Moore. As unlikely as it may seem at first glance, we can rest assured that in the minds of our opponents, it is "first Alabama, then the world." Many of us never thought that someone like George W. Bush would ascend to the Presidency, but he did. Let it be a lesson to us - a lesson we choose to apply now.

Please consider doing whatever you can to promote the efforts of http://stoproy.com .

Best,

StopRoy.com Staff
