Locals to protest Bennett at Conference
BAKERSFIELD - William Bennett’s comments ignited a firestorm of controversy across the nation and in Bakersfield, last week.
On Monday some local Republicans and African-Americans gathered at a local church to plan a protest for Saturday. Their protest would coincide with the Bakersfield Business Conference where former Education Secretary Bennett is scheduled to speak.
William Bennett argues that his comments were taken out of context and insists that they were not racist.

But his comments outraged local people including people from Tri Stone Missionary Baptist Church in Bakersfield. On Monday they announced their plans to protest outside the Bakersfield Business Conference.
They state they have contacted Conference Organizer George Martin, who believes Bennett is no racist and has no plans to pull him as a speaker. Martin has scheduled a meeting with local African-American leaders and Bennett after his conference appearance.
