(RawStory) Conservative Senator hints he could lead fight against nominee
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Conservative_Republican_senator_hints_he_could_1004.html

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) questioned Tuesday whether Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has a “firm commitment” to what he called the framers’ “original intent” of the Constitution, saying that President Bush’s knowledge of her “heart” didn’t end the need for tough questioning, Roll Call reported on their website Tuesday afternoon, RAW STORY can reveal. Excerpts:
#

A potential 2008 presidential candidate and member of the Judiciary Committee, Brownback on Tuesday served up the most detailed and most hesitant statement among Senate Republicans on Miers’ nomination, waiting more than a day to offer up his critique.

“President Bush has a long-standing working relationship with Ms. Miers and I trust the president knows her heart and her mind. Even so, the confirmation process has just begun and questions about her views on the Constitution need to be answered,” Brownback said in a prepared statement, echoing Bush’s remarks Tuesday morning in a Rose Garden press conference.

<...>

Brownback did not outright oppose Miers, nor have any Senate Republicans to date. But the Kansas Republican went the furthest in questioning Miers’ conservative bona fides, potentially positioning himself to be the leader of a opposition to the nominee from the right if she does not meet their expectations.

2. I wonder what Brownback's interpretation of the framers'....
"original intent" of the Constitution is. We probably wouldn't recognize the Constitution after he got through with his views on its intent.

5. So Brownback wants a Catholic? And Opus Dei Catholic?
Somehow, I just have to doubt his sincerity. This is all just colorful subterfuge, unless he doesn't trust George to appoint someone who will try to kill Roe.

16. My brain is spinning. They actually said that?
A judge's judicial philosophy is not germane? It's the whole point. And this originalist stuff is nonsense, it is impossible to relate the Constitution as originally written to contemporary events. The Constitution is different from the one originally created. It is, quite frankly, a work in progress. In other words it is (gasp) evolving.

Sorry for the mini lecture. Someone just drug in a soap box, and I hopped right up on it. :)

7. Oh yeah, and pigs can fly.
Rove is still in control, he'll flog brownback into shape. You dance to the pipers song, and last i looked the piper was still a pudgy balding guy in glasses named KKKarl. I keep seeing this related to certain candidates making a symbol to their base to show just how conservative they are for 2008. Does anyone think brownback has to prove that to anyone?

8. This is as much a suspense story...
As tom coburn's early statement that he was "unsure" about whether he'd vote for roberts. He was so unsure he had to do a crossword and have a little cry before falling in line.

9. She's a Trojan horse...
She'll face pre-arranged 'unified' opposition, withdraw her name, and then Bush will be able to nominate a truly evil bastard to the SC, taking the wind out of the Dems' sails.

Hey, Brownback could tell me the sun will come up tomorrow morning, and I'd ask for another source. He's slippery.

He'll get plenty of backroom reassurances in the coming days from the Whitehouse.

14. She's not qualified, thats it
I don't know why all the discussion about her philosphic views. She's is not qualified to be a supreme court justice. This should be the argument. Her nomination is a perfect example of Bush's terrible choices in nominees. This is what the average person is angry about, after the FEMA disaster.

To argue her conservative views just sends everybody back to their original camps and the fundies once again rally behind Bush.

This shows people the types who are aligned with Bush so much that they think they own him when it counts. But what bull. Original intent = back when workers, minorities, and women had few rights.

28. Here's the Difference between thugs and Dems...
thugs tolerate a little dissent in the party as long as everything comes out fine. Dems on the other hand that vote the wrong way or otherwise do the wrong thing are villified by members of their own party.

29. Model speech for Democrats
I see where my distinguished colleagues on the other side of the aisle have raised grave questions about the secretive manner in which the president is attempting to sneak his personal lawyer onto the Supreme Court.

I want my esteemed colleague to know that I stand at his side, ready to fight for the Senate's right to have full disclosure on the qualifications of Supreme Court candidates' positions on important issues.

Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 07:16 AM by in_cog_ni_to
the opposite is true. All Brownback has to do is take Harriet into his office and ask her, "Will you vote to overturn Roe V. Wade?"

"Will you vote against Gay rights?"

"Will you vote for prayers in schools?"

"Will you vote for corporations and to continue raping the middle class?"

It's that simple. She's a Bush insider and will give the wackos all the info they need to confirm her. Brownback is putting on a show for the WH and KKKRove to make the Dems think she's not a wolf in sheep's clothing. Don't believe a damn thing those people say.

He said he'd oppose Miers if he found out she was of the mindset that Roe v. Wade was settled law.
