Fears mount as US opens new military installation in Paraguay

Controversy is raging in Paraguay, where the US military is conducting secretive operations. Five hundred US troops arrived in the country on Jul. 1, 2005 with planes, weapons and ammunition. Eyewitness reports prove that an airbase exists in Mariscal Estigarribia, Paraguay, which is 200 kilometres from its border with Bolivia and may be utilized by the US military. Officials in Paraguay claim the military operations are routine humanitarian efforts and deny that any plans are underway for a US base. Yet human rights groups in the area are deeply worried. White House officials are using rhetoric about terrorist threats in the tri-border region (where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet) in order to build their case for military operations, which are in many ways reminiscent of the build up to the invasion of Iraq.

The tri-border area is home to the Guarani Aquifer, one of the world's largest reserves of water. Near the Estigarribia airbase are Bolivia's natural gas reserves, the second largest in Latin America. Political analysts believe US operations in Paraguay are part of a preventative war to control these natural resources and suppress social uprisings in Bolivia.

Argentinian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel commented on the situation in Paraguay and warned, "Once the United States arrives, it takes a long time to leave. And that really frightens me."

it is actually one of the most frightening things i have heard in a long while...now we have the foothold, it will be....as it has always been, just the beginning. the beginning of taking control of the oil and the gas in both central and south america. it often seems now that, no matter what the outcome will be for the world, the usa just continues one foot after the other, to methodically take control of the world as it feels the need.

The U.S. has claimed that they are concerned about Middle East terrorists who have been crossing borders.

Consider this -

The Tri-Lateral Commission has probably decided that water and oil must be in THEIR private hands and they are working their way around the world and the Americas and the Carib must be conquered. Just guessing.

There may also be drug wars going on - people other than the Colombia dealers may be trespassing on U.S. deals. Just guessing.

Paraguay may be the new home of PNAC and the Federalist Society shen the U.S. is nicely destroyed - not totally because it must rise up again to at least the level of an average third world country. Just guessing.

With the destruction of the U.S., the religious right might get their Armeggedon, but if not, they can move in with the Rev. Moon.

Bolivia and the other countries are rich in minerals.

Several of us here were alarmed months ago when Paraquay first "invited the U.S. troops there".

I posted a good map back then here at the DU showing the proximity to the Santa Cruz oil fields, but I'm so lousy with the archives that I would never find it.

Okay, the chess game of these "tal vez" December elections in Bolivia is getting pretty complicated to follow. However, there is another theory floating about that could well be plausible – What is underway is a skilled move by the on-its-deathbed MNR to hold on to power. Here's how it works:

To be clear, a scenario by which the MNR takes the Presidency through suspension of elections will be greeted about as warmly by Bolivia's social movements as Baptist fundamentalists might welcome a transvestite bishop. If the MNR really is pondering such a move it must be carefully weighing how much turmoil it is willing to provoke in order to retake power. I can't imagine anyone sane being willing to do this to Bolivia. But political ambition has trumped sanity in more countries than this one.

so is this: Today CNN reported the arrest of 3 illegal aliens at Ft. Bragg. The three, including 2 Indonesians were teaching foreign languages to military personnel on the base. These language teachers were working through a contract with BIB Consultants, Inc. which has a contract with the govt. NTE $50 million through 2007 to provide foreign language services.
So what is the significance? Indonesia has massive amounts of oil--it is predominantly Muslim AND there has been significant terrorist activity against foreign interests there.
I find Ft. Bragg an intriguing location for these Bahasa Indonesia lessons...
