Refugees ordered out of shelters by Oct. 15
By Lara Jakes Jordan
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — <snip>

Just over 68,200 hurricane refugees remain in shelters, down from a high of 250,000 after Katrina hit Aug. 29, said Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Natalie Rule. They face a midmonth deadline, set by President Bush, to move into apartments, trailers and in some cases, hotels, as they look for permanent housing. <snip>

HAUGHTON, LA

<snip> Haughton Police Chief Rodney Farrington says FEMA expects to have people placed in the Haughton mobile homes sometime during the next two weeks, so he's stepping up patrols. No word on when more FEMA trailers will arrive.

4. there is no privacy in a shelter-no real beds, no place to make a cup of
java--probably are alcohal free. guess i would certainly take a trailer-a place to call home.

6. i heard someone mention an idea to give people vouchers
for renting apartments--msnbc or cnn did something on the florida trailer parks and it was depressing and rather a bleak existence.

sure--get them out of the shelters asap and give them vouchers to rent apartments/houses, and get them some support for food, etc.

but to kick them out of shelters and offer no other substitution is inhumane.

8. Surprised Red Cross too
The deadline looms as FEMA considers extending a program set to expire Oct. 24 that reimburses the American Red Cross for the cost of hotel rooms for victims. So far, the Red Cross has spent $112 million on hotel rooms for 464,560 people since Sept. 3, said spokeswoman Carrie Martin.

Under an agreement dating back to 1997, FEMA typically reimburses the Red Cross special accommodations program when other housing isn't quickly available for disaster victims, said FEMA spokeswoman Rule.

As of today, FEMA planned to let the reimbursement program expire Oct. 24. "No decisions have been made if there will be a need to continue reimbursements beyond the 24th," Rule said.

But Red Cross spokeswoman Martin said the charity was unaware of any expiration date for the program, saying, "Our understanding is that it will continue until we are notified by FEMA."

Though honestly I didn't know FEMA reimbursed them, I thought that was why they needed such huge donations at these times. I'm not complaining, just surprised.

9. Bushco to survivors: what more d'ya want? We are
throwing money into the area - so go back - live in a trailor - and if you are a laborer go back to work for a contractor and make less than you did before the storm - so that our cronies can make even BIGGER profits off of the rebuilding. Oh- and where you used to live - gone, and we aren't going to rebuild that part of the city - but we are building a nice huge trailor park (for big profits for cronies/donors) to keep you segregated from all of the rich people who are going to relocate to the area to buy up pricey properties that will "blossom" from the redevelopment $. So what more doya want? Get out of the shelter - and go work for lower wages - and we'll keep you out of sight at night (and off NO properties) in our big new trailor communities.

:sarcasm: grrrrr.

10. More "compassionate conservatism"; I wish I was surprised.
What little help these people got disappears
as soon as the TV news moves on to another story.

This should be a national scandal,
but will anyone even hear about it?

11. Looks like the compassion has a shelf life of about 6 weeks.

Anyone should be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps in 6 weeks. Goodness, that's 42 whole days.

This will be the next major fuck up on his part. they are going to kick these people out, who have no place to go.

they pour money into iraq to kill people, yet they don't have it in their own hearts to pour money into our own country to people to live.

colossal racist failure*.
