BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least four people were killed in rebel attacks in Baghdad, adding to fears of spiralling violence in the run-up to the October 15 referendum on the new constitution for post- Saddam Hussein Iraq.
US President George W. Bush was preparing to address the nation to defend his strategy in war-torn Iraq while warning that a quick exit for US troops could sow a deadly harvest of future terror attacks on US soil.
Thursday's violence erupted the day after a bomb attack in the town of Hilla south of Baghdad that killed 25 people as Shiite Muslims gathered for prayers at the end of their first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Iraq's parliament also Wednesday bowed to UN and US pressure by reversing changes to the rules of next week's referendum that critics deemed were unfair to opponents of the divisive new constitution.
