God told me to invade Iraq, Bush tells Palestinian ministers-BBC exclusive
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 07:06 AM by gbarford
The following press release was linked to on the BBC's press office website by mistake earlier, it wasn't supposed to appear until the embargo (see below) had been lifted.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2005/10_october/06/bush.shtml

This press release is embargoed until 2230 hours (5.30pm eastern U.S.) on Thursday 6 October. Before that time it is only available through the link which you have been sent.

President George W. Bush told Palestinian ministers that God had told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq - and create a Palestinian State, a new BBC series reveals.

In Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, a major three-part series on BBC TWO (at 9.00pm on Monday 10, Monday 17 and Monday 24 October), Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003.

Nabil Shaath says: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, "George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan." And I did, and then God would tell me, "George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …" And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East." And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

Abu Mazen was at the same meeting and recounts how President Bush told him: "I have a moral and religious obligation. So I will get you a Palestinian state."

The series charts the attempts to bring peace to the Middle East, from Bill Clinton's peace talks in 1999/2000 to Israel's withdrawal from Gaza last August.

Norma Percy, series producer of The 50 Years War (1998) returns, with producers Mark Anderson and Dan Edge, to tell the inside story of another seven years of crisis.

Presidents and Prime Ministers, their generals and ministers tell what happened behind closed doors as peace talks failed and the intifada exploded.

Israel and the Arabs: Elusive Peace - Mondays 10, 17 and 24 October, from 9.00 to 10.00pm on BBC TWO.

16. When asked if he spoke to his father (poppy) about invading Iraq, he said
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 07:29 AM by Pirate Smile
he spoke to a higher father - or something like that. It was in an interview.

edit to add - "Did Mr. Bush ask his father for any advice? "I asked the president about this. And President Bush said, 'Well, no,' and then he got defensive about it," says Woodward. "Then he said something that really struck me. He said of his father, 'He is the wrong father to appeal to for advice. The wrong father to go to, to appeal to in terms of strength.' And then he said, 'There's a higher Father that I appeal to.'"

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/04/15/60minutes/main612067.shtml

It is the 60 Minutes interview with Woodward - where Powell says Cheney had a fever to go to war, Powell was despondent, etc.

Interesting to read through again.

83. Well, he didn't actually make any comments about the M.E...
according to that article. I do agree that the following sounds really strange:
<snip>
At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.”

It may partly be a matter of interpretation, even still, because there are many religious people who see God as motivating them, and that is not crazy. In his case, it may be a sort of megalomania, seeing himself as some sort of "chosen" person. Scary.

STILL, the article didn't get into Bush M.E. policies, which is what I was responding to. Don't get me wrong. I think that Bush has been a horrible disaster for our country. It was just in that one case, I guess I saw a potential silver lining...

I was on a tangent there, regarding a possible positive outcome of his overly-religous way of speaking in talks with the Palestinians, which, as I listen again to his terrorism speech, was probably a sad case of wishful thinking.

67. This does sound truly insane, but oddly, I see a possible positive outcome
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 10:22 AM by Wordie
To say you are hearing voices from God telling you to do things sounds absolutely insane to most Western ears. If it were a poor, homeless person saying this, he/she would probably be promptly locked up for evaluation. However, there may be more going on.

I'm thinking about one of al Qaida's major objections to Western culture: that it is totally corrupt and godless. Bush may be trying to convince the Arab participants in this meeting of his sincerity and get them to see him as a fellow man of God. Remember that these men are Muslims and take God quite seriously. What do these statements sound like to a Muslim ear? Do they give Bush greater credibility?

<snip>
And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East." And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

Whatever one believes about his religious beliefs, it's certainly possible to see the above statement as positive. It is a BIG step for a President to even be talking about a Palestinian state. And now with his dismal showing in the polls, it is also possible that his position will become increasingly like that of Nixon vis a vis China: he will be doubly motivated to achieve peace as a last shred of a Presidential legacy to leave for history.

Whether his efforts will have any effect is a completely different question, as it appears that he has little understanding of the history of the ME. And as far as God telling him to invade ANY country, I agree fully with the rest of the posters in this thread.

71. Georgesama Bush Lying
now, when the man claims 'god' told him to go to war 'for' god's benefit, we all need to really question the sanity of the man that sits in the drivers seat of this nation-

Even 'conservitives' would have to think this is just plain nuts-

As a spiritual person, I have had ...'promptings'?... nudges?.. gut instincts that have motivated me to do things that might not make sense to others, and that I can't justify or explain, but I would NEVER presume to act on those, when it would involve the welfare, and lives of others- nevermind millions of people, and the world at large.

Son of sam ? Andrea Yates? all sorts of minds that did great harm claiming 'god told me to do this' jump out at me- this should horrify his 'base'.

If they would bother to listen- and then even more unlikely ACT-

Perhaps I'm a wet blanket, but some of the best work of progressive liberals in the last 65 years has gone into de-stymatizing mental illness. I know we all love to villefy Bush, and what he's describing does sound delusional. Nevertheless, there are lots of functioning people in your state and mine who hear voices and have other pscyhotic features who still function.

Don't throw out the baby with the bath water, ( in this case that would be respct for people with mental health disorders) .

116. You're correct, of course
and you are being a wet blanket, but you are doing so for a good reason - mental illness is no laughing matter. Certainly those who claim a God (or Satan, for that matter) speaks to them and tells them to "do it" are mentally ill.

However, I don't love to vilify Shrub - he vilifies himself by his words and his deeds. Commenting on his words and deeds is not vilification. Since to "vilify" means to slander...and slander means to speak falsely

102. Higher father ...
This IS a load.

I think that Shrub simply used the evangelical wack jobs to do what his drunk ass couldn't.

He had an awakening alright. A light bulb went off in his head and he saw what most people with a soul would NEVER think off ... the revelation of how to use religion to meet a political end.

If you don't believe in God, and if you have no regard for people that do, then you're free to use religion as a tool to get what you couldn't get otherwise.

When Shrub had "quit" drinking, became born again, and was buddying up to the other evangelicals -- singing hymns and reciting passages from the bible; Shrub was essentially attending a self-help class, but he was learning a lot less about God and a lot more about how the belief in God can manipulate the masses. He saw blind faith first hand ... filled with hate and anger after lOSING his bid for Congress, it hit him like a freight train ... "I could use these poor bastards."

He went against his father's beliefs. He discontinued trying to find the center and went to the far Christian Right, which without true belief in God and following the words of Jesus Christ, has resulted in the creation of the Christian Reich.

This guy is now surrounded by other neocons that recognized his capabilities and unlimited, boundless, and unabridged use of religion to meet a political end. This, combined with his family tree of power and wealth, created endless possibilities for control.

Meet the George W. Bush monster. A souless creation of genetics and religious manipulation set fourth on the democratic experiment known as America.

Don't pray to God, wake up. Tell a friend. Be a REAL patriot and give the gift of the truth to anyone that wants to see reality.

109. The God in the OT was a War God.
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 03:37 PM by Disturbed
That God spured the destruction of Sodom and Gemorah and instructed the Jews to kill every living thing in that city, including women, children and babies. In Egypt that God killed the 1st born of every Egyptian. The OT is filled with stories of this God being a viscious killer. I guess it must be that God that the Silverspoon Sociopath gets messages from.

Google "God of War in Old Testament" . There are plenty of articles about that.

In the Old Testament there is so much war and violence sanctioned by Yahweh. Is this the same loving God portrayed in the New Testament?
In the Old Testament there is so much war and violence sanctioned by Yahweh. Is this the same loving God portrayed in the New Testament? Let's take this seriously by quoting a few verses that seem repugnant to us. For example, Deuteronomy 20 contains Yahweh's instructions about war. If a city does not accept Israel's offer of peace and open its gates, then "when the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it"(verse13). With regard to other cities, the command is (verse 16), "Do not leave anything that breathes."

You probably also recall that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down, and then the Israelites "destroyed with the sword every living thing in it - men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys"(Joshua 6:21). This certainly seems brutal and vindictive, doesn't it? Or consider Joshua 11:20, "For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses." From our twenty-first century point of view, we ask, "What good was accomplished by all this annihilation?"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20051006/ts_alt_afp/mideastbritainusiraq_051006214432

2 hours, 45 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) - US
President George W. Bush allegedly said God told him to invade
Iraq and
Afghanistan, a new BBC documentary will reveal, according to details.

Bush made the claim when he met Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas and then foreign minister Nabil Shaath in June 2003, the ministers told the documentary series to be broadcast in Britain later this month.

The US leader also told them he had been ordered by God to create a Palestinian state, the ministers said.

Shaath, now the Palestinian information minister, said: "
President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God.

'God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan'.'

"And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq...' And I did.

"'And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.' And by God I'm gonna do it'," said Shaath.

Bush: God told me to invade Iraq
President George Bush has claimed he was told by God to invade Iraq and attack Osama bin Laden's stronghold of Afghanistan as part of a divine mission to bring peace to the Middle East, security for Israel, and a state for the Palestinians.

The President made the assertion during his first meeting with Palestinian leaders in June 2003, according to a BBC series which will be broadcast this month.

The revelation comes after Mr Bush launched an impassioned attack yesterday in Washington on Islamic militants, likening their ideology to that of Communism, and accusing them of seeking to "enslave whole nations" and set up a radical Islamic empire "that spans from Spain to Indonesia". In the programmeElusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, which starts on Monday, the former Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath says Mr Bush told him and Mahmoud Abbas, former prime minister and now Palestinian President: "I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George go and end the tyranny in Iraq,' and I did."

And "now again", Mr Bush is quoted as telling the two, "I feel God's words coming to me: 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.' And by God, I'm gonna do it."

158. I can hear the cuckoo singing in the cuckooberry tree...
Although, to be honest, this isn't the first time. Captain Crotchsock made the same "God told me to invade Afghanistan and Iraq" pronouncement to Arab leaders before. I guess he thinks it should be comforting to them to think he is trying to follow God's directives ("even if he's not a Muslim, he's a God-fearing man"). What he fails to realize is that the conventional wisdom in Arab lands is that western Christian leaders are always claiming to be "following God's will"...when that will usually involves conquering and colonizing Muslim lands. In other words, what sounds to Chimpy like a conciliatory statement will generally sound to Arabs like the start of another Crusade.

The one new wrinkle here is God telling Bush to create a Palestinian state. I'll bet that isn't going to sit too well with his fundie supporters, who are convinced every inch of the "holy land" must remain under Israeli control so that Armageddon can take place and Jesus can return in glory in the near future. :eyes:

This article is making the rounds today and even if it is a re-run of an old Haaretz article this is having an impact as we speak.

The news that Bush (leader of the free world) is talking to god is absolutely revolting to the secular Europeans who believes in strict separation of church and state.

The WH denial will only fuel the media hype.

168. Would somebody Baker Act this guy??
The Florida Baker Act
In a nutshell, if a person is believed to be mentally ill and a hazard to themselves and others, they can be taken to a mental health facility and screened.

He is sure to visit Jeb sometime.

"A person believed to have a mental illness and meeting the criteria for involuntary examination who has refused voluntary examination or who is unable to determine that an examination is needed after a full explanation of the purpose of the examination is provided, may be transported to a receiving facility designed for psychiatric involuntary evaluation and short-term treatment.

There must be reason to believe that without such treatment, the person is likely to suffer from self-neglect posing a real and present threat of substantial harm to the person’s well-being that can’t be avoided through the help of willing family members or friends or the provision of other services.

In the alternative, there must be a substantial likelihood that without care or treatment the person will cause serious bodily harm to himself or herself or others in the near future as evidenced by recent behavior."

Surely, having control over the military and our nuclear arsenal, and showing signs of either delusions of grandeur or schizophrenia, this would make him an ideal candidate for the Baker Act.
