Frustration over Red Cross debit card grows
Many who call seeking $360 in aid complain of repeat busy signals
By EDWARD HEGSTROM

BEAUMONT - First, it was FEMA. Now, the American Red Cross has become the target of frustration in this region hard hit by Hurricane Rita.

East Texas storm victims have been calling Red Cross toll-free lines to get debit cards offered by the agency, but some report getting busy signals for hours and even days.

The cards are good for $360, the same amount offered earlier to Katrina victims. But processing centers in East Texas have not yet been set up, and Red Cross officials cannot say when the cards will be available. <snip>
