San Francisco police officer fired for protest clubbing

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - A San Francisco police officer who broke the arm of an anti-war protester was fired for deliberately filing a false report about the incident, the police commission said.

The San Francisco Police Commission had previously cleared Officer Anthony Nelson, 34, of a more serious charge that he used unnecessary force in clubbing the demonstrator during a spontaneous street protest at the start of the Iraq invasion in 2003.

...

The commission on Wednesday determined that Nelson, a five-year veteran of the department, lied about what happened during the incident and filed an "intentionally inaccurate" report.

Nelson said that Vaccarezza was threatening to hit him with a sign attached to a wooden stick, but video of the incident showed that she didn't have a stick and was retreating at the time, officials said.

5. Huh?
He gets FIRED for the false report and NOT for breaking her arm? What gives with that bullshit! Cleared of the use of unnecessary force? Was that BEFORE they saw the video that made him out to be a liar? Something is not coming across to me why this is great news. Am I misunderstanding something? Yes, great he got fired and, yes, great that she collected on her law suit. But if the basis for all of this was him telling a lie and not also the outrageous amount of violence he used against his victim then, imo, something is wrong about this.

6. I agree that there should be consequences to the officer's actions
I agree that there should be consequences to the officer's unnecessary violence. This may not be over yet, but just the first step. Now that he has been fired and his report has been discredited, civil & criminal actions could follow. I could be wrong, but I believe the first time he as cleared, it was an internal department investigation. If so, than the DA could still bring up charges.

I'm not very familiar with this case, so I could be wrong.

7. This sounds like the protest that my daughter was arrested at
The SF police were out of control and used unnecessary force. I'm glad there is at least some consequences to them.

11. Private civil rights violation lawsuit "in the bag".
I'm thinking at least $5 million in damages, possibly much, much more.
