MSNBC.com Breaking News: New York subway security threat
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 04:34 PM by MIMIC
New York increasing security on subways due to security threat, official says

It's on the breaking news banner on MSNBC.com

UPDATE:

New York to be alerted to possible attack
Credibility of the source is in question, but police will advise vigilance

NEW YORK - Police were preparing Thursday to warn subway riders of an unspecified threat to the subway system, NBC reported. Sources told NBC that the information came from a single informant of varying credibility.

The informant said operatives would try to smuggle explosives onto the New York train system in an imitation of the London and Madrid attacks, several sources told NBC. According to these sources, attackers were expected to conceal explosives in baby carriages.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Some officials told NBC News that they doubt the credibility of the threat. The source has apparently given some accurate information in the past, and some inaccurate, and there are reasons, they say, to doubt this new information.

Nonetheless, because the source gave a specific time for the planned attacks — the second week in October — New York police had decided to make some of this information public and ask riders to be vigilant.

There are no plans to raise the terror threat level.

64. You kind of have to wonder...
If the "source" is sometimes credible, sometimes not...What's to say there's not actually someone planning to attack, but were successful in putting law enforcement OFF of the scent...so they could pull some crazy attack elsewhere while everyone's focusing on the subway?

I'm still having trouble accepting the idea that the threat is real at all, but wouldn't it be perfect for attackers to see everyone moving AWAY from the real target(s) in order to protect the subway?

A precious quote just heard on CBS News: "Many intelligence analysts listening to the internet chatter described it as 'imagination run amok' and nowhere near a full scale operational plot." Yep that about sums it up. Very reminiscent of the phony terror alert launched after John Kerry gave his acceptance speech at the convention, based on stale information,it served their diversionary purposes quite nicely then and they are beating the same tired fear drum now. Without a doubt the most mendacious, manipulative maladministration ever.

and i could swear it was the NY Post, if not the Daily News.
I was pretty shocked.
And you know what? Very few people in New York are going to be talking about this alert- except it's the same old same old. If anything a lot more people are going to be thinking like us- that it's a diversionary scam. joe barcalounger in the metro area woke the fuck up just recently. this administration is officially and openly hated at this point by the most apolitical people you have ever met. .

Bush is totally sounding off about islam being out to get us today. He won't quit. he wants more money and even more business for his cronies.

He may be letting something happen.

He's given the radical muslims plenty of reason to attack us now. All he has to do is let something happen again.

Right now is the least support he's ever had for his war, AND he wants to go after Iran. Pay attention.

Since the FBI said car thief rings are shipping cars to iraq and blowing them up (I know idiocy), it may involve a car bomb.

They've already made the public announcement to make people think car thieves are linked to alquaida.

I'm going to guess what ever muslim group they're letting attack us, has just turned out to be going to attack us very soon - sooner than they thought, or bush and the FBI wouldn't be sounding off like this.

Just a guess to their motives. I've seen too many bush announcements that they're out to get us today. Far far more than usual. Way too many for one day.

particularly the suburban commuters (think Greenwich, CT).
Personally, I think the Mayor and the Police Commissioner may believe it's real but I have my doubts and the DHS, incompetent as they are, doubt it too.
If Bloomberg thinks it's a fake, he might be willing to go along because it makes him look tough in comparison with Ferrer.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/N/NYC_SUBWAY?SITE=NCBER&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&SECTION=HOME

WASHINGTON (AP) -- New York officials are increasing security on city subways after word of a "credible security threat" to the city's transit system, Rep. Peter King said Thursday.

King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said, "Obviously, this is a significant threat."

He said he got his information from New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

107. So many coincidences.... Let me remind you of the terror alert chart
Last years I made a study of terror alerts and their correlation to Bush getting in trouble. Since 9/11, every time Chimpy screwed up or dropped in his ratings, Tom Ridge and DHS would quickly issue a terror alert. This no "tinfoil hat" speculation. Even Tom Ridge has admitted to issuing terror alerts at the wanton request of the White House, even when they knew they had no credible evidence.

Here's a link to my study:

Timeline of Terror Alerts

And here's a link to the chart that explained the study in visual terms:

Chart: Bush Ratings vs. Terror Alerts

How convenient that in the same week Ton Delay is charged with money laundering, Bush ratings plummet even further down, Frist is investigated for insider trading, and Rove is about to be indicted... we get this terror alert.

Furthermore, they claim they found the info on potential terror attacks today in Iraq. This, on the same day Bush delivers a speech to convince the nation to keep fighting Iraq. Come on!!!

It's always by "incredible coincidences" that Bush gets to save his butt. Give me a break.

PS: This is not to say there are not credible terror threats. Of course. Particularly after the devastating attacks in Madrid and London, it's important we stay alert. But the sudden alert released on such a crucial and convenient date just rings phony to me. They've done it before. Tom Ridge has admitted it so.

108. "May Have Involved Iraqi Pharmacists"
Police Investigate New York Subway Terror Threat

Security Increased Following Possible Plot Information

Oct. 6, 2005 —  The New York Police Department and FBI are investigating a "credible" tip that 19 operatives have been deployed to the city to place bombs in the subway, and security in the subways has been increased. Department of Homeland Security sources told ABC News they were very doubtful the threat information is credible, however

"I wanted to assure New Yorkers that we have done and we will continue to do everything we can to protect the city," Bloomberg said. "We will spare no resource. We will spare no expense."

According to sources in intelligence, emergency services and police headquarters, the intelligence community developed information that the threat may have involved pharmacists from Iraq coming to New York for some kind of chemical attack targeting the subways.

Three insurgents, one or more of whom are pharmacists, were arrested during a raid by a U.S. military and intelligence community team, sources said, and one of those caught disclosed the threat. Because it slipped out during the arrest, the plot was deemed credible.

109. oh my god, that would be very very bad
If the war in Iraq has spilled over into NY, that would totally eviscerate my family's argument that we have "taken the war to them" and, at the same time, reinforce my assertion that the war in Iraq, having nothing to do with 9/11, has actually only created new terrorists, and they will come here as soon as they can.

111. This wreaks of Rovian tactics, even if the threat has 'some' credibility
We should view this as very possibly fueled by Rovian influence on the media. If we ever learn the true source of the threat, we may see a new tactic.

If it's true that the threat is from Iraqi Insurgents, then Rove has sacrificed a significant point - Iraq was a mistake. Even if the source is credible, the fact that Rove has fueled this threat demonstrates that he concedes to Americas perception that Iraq was bad.

This is a huge concession, and not typical of Rove at all.

So, we must also give rise to other possibilities. Maybe Rove is already toast to Bush and a new advisor is playing damage control. Maybe nobody is calling the shots and the media is simply employing knee-jerk journalism to capitalize on the moment.

But, IF the threat came from Iraqi Insurgents, then the whole episode will be bad for Bush the Lesser and his cabal.

I'm anxious to see how this plays out.
