"Support Our Troops" Rally Held ("non-political," first of its kind)

"Support Our Troops" Rally Held

It was billed as "non-political," first of its kind "Support Our Troops Day" here in Indianapolis.

...

"I am so upset because it breaks my heart that he's going through. He goes 14 days without a shower, 17 to 18 hour days and he thinks that he is doing this and the people behind him don't support him," Marine parent Connie Huse explained.

...

"Maintaining our patriotic focus is not about the politics of should we or should we not, it's about supporting our troops, loving our country," Russ Eaglin, USMC Commandant Marine Corp League of Indianapolis said.

...

"One of my hopes is that non political shows of support like this will pop up across the country," Peggy Getty, a Marine mom told News 8.

1. Never could figure how supporting * meant supporting the troops;
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 09:30 PM by jedr
VA hospitals closing , medical benefits taken away,extend tours of duty,etc,etc....these guys(and gals) are being treated like sh*t, let's support them with someone or some organization ( not the VFW) who will support them,( and that doesn't mean some damn silly ribbon magnet on the back of your car)

2. Sounds like a "blind loyalty" rally to me

"Maintaining our patriotic focus is not about the politics of should we or should we not, it's about supporting our troops, loving our country," Russ Eaglin, USMC Commandant Marine Corp League of Indianapolis said.

That's right. You can never criticize the US military. Ever. Or you're a filthy, terroristic, Commie bastard.

And as to the Marine wife who's upset that her husband has it hard in the Corps, that goes with the job, lady.

You can support the troops and oppose the war, and I'm really sick of hearing from zealots like this who cheer our young men off to death.

3. ...non political?
so how DO you support the troops without, indirectly at least, supporting the war? It is rather difficult, especially when taking a neutral stance is in essence a stance that allows for the status-quo...the continuation of war. Also, patriotism is another part of pro-aggression, closed-minded mentality.

Oh, and 14 days without a shower? Am I supposed to be concerned? The entire third world gets their only shower when it rains. I've heard of people experiencing the same things...on camping trips (I know people who don't take showers out of their own choice). Try supporting the troops who are missing limbs, or have permanent damage, ESPECIALLY when the people above them don't support them (in a literal way). Try STOPPING that insanity instead of allowing it to pointlessly continue. No, I guess concentrating on the troops with smelly armpits and unclean hair is more important....:eyes:

5. I agree, the shower thing is very strange. But I think we can support the
troops by bringing them home and by fighting for better vereran's benefits.

10. Well put
... Here is something I do: I have been known to buy them a beer or two when I bump into them in a bar. Often times I request that the bartender tells the soldier why the drink was bought for him or her but not who bought it. I have done this for the soldiers in times of peace too.
I live quite close to an Army base and an Air-force base, so I have wound up buying lots of drinks over the years. I know this is a little thing but it feels like a right thing to do.
A second thing I do is to warn kids of military age why joining up is a bad idea at this time. This is a sort of "support the troops before they become troops" kind of thing. My Beyond Treason link below is an example of the kind of information which I give to them. When possible I try to show this same material to vets but alas it falls on deaf ears. (Another reason to buy them that free drink anonymously).

4. I suppose that is theoretically possible
But every "support our troops" rally I have ever seen or observed has turned out to be a "support the war, support the president" rally.

7. True, but that's where we have to take away that talking point;
that you have to support the war to support the troops....As a vet I feel that someone has to help these guys get what they need when they come home...when you sign up for the military you don't get to ask if it's a just war, you have a contract and you fill it..when you come home you get active and help right the wrong...this is the message that we need to put out. Let's get these people home There's 58.000 plus names on a wall in D.C., and this country would have done much better with everyone of them alive today.

6. We spend over a billion dollars a day
Every day, weekends and holidays too, we spend more than a billion dollars on defense every day. The money that pays for that is taken out of my check every payday, and I don't have any say in how it's spent, or any say in where it goes.

What kind of support do you think you need, Connie Huse? I should smile and be happy about the squandering of my tax dollars? I should be dancing in the streets about the inhumanity of war and its horrible effects on your son, the poor people of Iraq and Afghanistan? What, exactly, do you want, Connie?

8. and just how do these people support the troops? ....
Do they raise money to augment the troops measly stipend for risking their lives to protect Exxon and Halliburton. Do they write letters to lonely soldiers or bake them cookies? Or do they just put some cheap, magnetic sticker on their gas hog SUV to make themselves feel better, and go on about their lives? My guess is that unless they have a son or a daughter, a relative or a friend, that got sucked into this mess, they just go with the magnetic sticker on their car. That is a sacrifice.
