WP Milbank: Presidential Weakness Reported (one of several stories)
By Dana Milbank

(snip)

Presidential Weakness Reported

President Bush is a man of steely discipline, but it appears the commander in chief has not gained complete mastery over his sweet tooth.

In a new book by author Stephen Mansfield, "The Faith of George W. Bush," the following passage appears on page 173: "Aides found him face down on the floor in prayer in the Oval Office. It became known that he refused to eat sweets while American troops were in Iraq, a partial fast seldom reported of an American president."

Seldom reported -- and apparently little observed. When the White House sent out the shared "pool report" of Bush's roundtable interview with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Australia, it became apparent that the president had fallen off the candy wagon.

"And he was relaxed. Very relaxed," was the description. "As a reporter began to ask about the Middle East . . . Mr. Bush popped a butterscotch Lifesaver in his mouth. He smacked the candy as he said: 'Middle East, that's right.' "

3. Someone blogged this story because I read this somewhere prior to
DM's story. That means he must be reading the bloggers which is a good sign, I think.

4. He gave up candy while our troops gave their life's away?
A picture of the Ugly Jerk just popped into my head

His ugly face puckered up with the ugly smirk sucking on a lifesaver candy next to his Ugly wife Pickles.

19. Wow, really "sacrificing" there Junior.
Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 09:47 AM by benfranklin1776
What a supreme exercise in self denial, eh giving up sweets? Jesus, Gandhi and Dr. King obviously have nothing on this man! Their sacrifices pale in comparison to giving up butterscotch mints. (MAX POSSIBLE Sarcasm) What a complete and utter farce. Now it turns out he couldn't even pull off that trivial exercise in nothingness and that it was a deliberately crafted phony story to show that he was "fasting" in commiseration with those he sent into the sausage grinder. The fact that he even lies about something as trivial as this shows that he is absolutely incapable of telling the truth about anything.

Whereas George gave up sweets a large number of Americans and Iraqis have given up their eyes, their ears, their limbs, and, in far, far too many cases, their lives because of his desire to play Little Caesar. Somehow I don't think Georgie's alleged "sacrifice" of sweets quite measures up to theirs.

6. The "Candy Ass Man".
What a frickin' liar and hypocrite this 'chimpster-in-chief' really is!

And, what would Jesus really say about all of this evil madness?

I heard a guy on PBS early this morning quote Proverbs..."He who oppresses the poor insults thy maker." (Sorry, I'm not a Biblical scholar...but, that was the gist of his quote. Quite apropos to Junior and all of his repug cohorts...wouldn't you agree?)

7. Steely Discipline?
What is that? Some kind of dildo? Self-discipline and George Bush are unknown to each other. This is the most self-indulgent asshole on the planet.

10. another thing bush didn't finish. he didn't finish his candy fast.
he didn't finish anything, ever... not his stint in the reserves, not any of his businesses, not the SEC examination of his insider trading with harken, not finishing his drinking period (no treatment,) not funding no child left behind, not funding the US police and fire departments for terrorism, not catching osama, saddam, nor finding the WMDs. he never finishes anything. he's the great unfinished fraud. he's like a bad husband who leaves half-done projects all over the house. our country now resembles one of those trash homes with half the siding off and sh*t piled all over the yard. thanks, bush. you're a quitter, man, face it.

12. What about the rest of this Milbank piece?
Maybe it's a bleary-eyed morning, but did Milbank reach a new level of Dem-bashing here? Is this what we're in for from the Washington Post(again), as Campaign 2004 gets underway?

15. I suspect it was more of
a falling down drunk or coked-up and the "...giving up candy..." thing was the cover story

nonetheless - if he hasn't given up candy, has he really given up the booze, etc.?

21. It's probably more of "the pretzles & booze thing".
And we're supposed to be impressed by this "act" (which is the only true word to describe this).

I am VERY scared for our country by this observation.

Just another nail in the coffin (of what once was our beloved country).

18. He fell off the candy wagon, did he?
This sounds like something straight out of the Onion! I haven't read the whole piece yet, but the excerpt surely sounds like satire. Wouldn't it be nice if SNL would do a little skit depicting this?

What an embarrassment this man is to our country.

22. face down?
IIRC, I read something once about the alcohol molecule and the sugar molecule being similar, and that frequently adult children of alcoholics who abstain from drink will over indulge in sweets. Anybody know anything about this?

23. funny, i was just thinking about that connection this morning
My alcoholic girlfriend (back on the booze) sez she really ate a ton of sweets when she wasn't drinking, but now that she's drinking, sweets don't appeal to her.

I didn't ask if they made her feel high or anything, tho, the sweets.

24. Pity George Bush
In a lifelong career vindicating the Peter Principle,
George has finally reached a place where the only position
to upwardly fail into is dictator or god-like being.
