Wolfowitz survives rocket attack
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Numerous rockets have slammed into the Baghdad hotel where U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was staying, injuring several people, coalition officials have told CNN.

As many as eight rockets were fired at the Al Rasheed Hotel -- used by many coalition officials -- at 6.10 a.m. local time Sunday morning (0610 GMT), officials said.

There were reports of serious injuries, including limb amputations, but Wolfowitz escaped unharmed and was led away from the scene by security forces, said U.S. officials.

Speaking at a press conference after the attack, Wolfowitz said one American may have been killed in the rocket attack on the hotel.

44. US knew the attack was coming
US warns of bomb threat to Baghdad hotel used by westerners

WASHINGTON, US: The United States on Saturday warned that Islamic extremists are plotting an attack, possibly a suicide car bombing, against a hotel in a specific Baghdad neighborhood that is frequented by westerners.

In a notice to Americans now in Iraq, a State Department consular officer in Baghdad said the US military had become aware of the threat recently but could not pinpoint the targetted hotel.

"The US military has indicated that Islamic extremists intend to carry out a bomb attack against a hotel in the Karada area of Baghdad," said the notice, a copy of which was provided to AFP in Washington by the State Department.

considering he was one of the four Memo recipients and this has happened, the guess would be that he avoids his buddy Rummy for a bit...and if he didn't leak the memo, maybe there's a plan to 'sanction' all four of the original recipients just to get the one turncoat...

9. Pathetic Clown in Blue Oxford Button Down
He has been pretending that going to Baghdad is like a business outing to Dayton Ohio.
I have a feeling he won't be seen around those parts anymore.

There appears to be a rather marked increase in activity over there.

One must conclude that when the US pulls out, our puppet ruling "authority" will all be murdered in very short order.

Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 10:14 AM by benfranklin1776
And he was surrounded by a phalanx of US soldiers (would have loved to hear what they were thinking) as he walked among the Chalabists, er I mean "adoring throngs." However things have now gone quite awry and quite off the stage managed script. Time for a rewrite. I suppose the next chapter will be the usual assurances to the American preople that this was actually a sign of progress and we will hear pronouncements that "Iraq and the world are a better place now that those rockets are no longer a threat to the Iraqi people and the world."

Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 03:14 AM by smallprint
They are saying the rockets were fired automatically (or by remote control) from a trailer on the edge of the barricaded area around the hotel... sounds pretty sophisticated...

Wolfowitz was staying on the 12th floor...

on edit:
"A Reuters photographer saw five impact holes on the west side of the brown hotel at roughly the 7th, 9th and 10th floors. He said three of the rockets appeared to have gone through the wall, the others through windows. "

23. Could the Blackhawk Down have been an attempt on Wolfie?
<snip>

Blackhawk attacked

Wolfowitz had visited Tikrit on Saturday, hours before the crew of a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter was attacked after it landed east of that city, an official at the Coalition Press Information Center told CNN.

The official would not say exactly how many hours before the attack on the Blackhawk Wolfowitz was there, but said the deputy defense minister left the area by helicopter.

24. Faux is reporting a US Soldier died in the attack
Edited on Sun Oct-26-03 05:49 AM by rmpalmer
What a shame.

On edit found MSNBC report:

In a daring dawn strike from point-blank range, anti-American forces unleashed a barrage of rockets Sunday against the Al Rasheed Hotel, a symbol of the U.S. presence, killing at least one American soldier and delivering another message of resistance to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.

“ONE U.S. soldier assigned to the CPA (Coalition Provisional Authority) was killed and 15 (people) were wounded,” a military spokeswoman said.

28. Wolfowitz appeared "shaken"
~ snip ~

Visiting Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, who appeared shaken as he addressed reporters shortly after the 6:10 a.m. attack, promised the attack would not deter the United States in its mission to transform Iraq (news - web sites).

Reminds me of this scene in Patriot Game I think, where the little jerk in the Operation Room gloats "That's a kill" watching the IR images of the raid on the training camp.

It doesn't take much to "shake" a chicken hawk, now does it? Born cowards just don't have the stomach for this sort of thing. Betcha he won't be going back.

Note how he "promised that the attack would not deter the United States in its misssion to transform Iraq." I'm sure it won't change the PNAC agenda one iota Mr. W. (you are expendable, just as all those brave soldiers who die every day). You'll just be keeping your sorry, yellow ass out of there from now on, that's all. :puke:

40. So, let me see if I got this straight...
1) They send one of the main neo-cons to Baghdad; and

2) They put him in a hotel that is KNOWN to hold coalition leaders.

3) The hotel is attacked.

My only question: Who is responsible for security planning? This was a stupid idea to put Wolfowitz in a high profile hotel. I have no doubt that the decision needlessly endangered lives.

They are really considering an investigation of this? Does this mean there was consenual adult sex occurring when the blasts happened? Someone would really want to give Wolfowitz a blowjob? If this is the case, I hope they set aside some $70 million to get to the bottom of this.

Oh my! Thanks be to God that the adults are in charge now. Honor and dignity have been restored!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031026/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq&cid=540&ncid=716

The slain American was a colonel, Wolfowitz said, without identifying him. That would be one of the highest ranking U.S. military officers killed in the Iraqi insurgency. Since President Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, 109 U.S. soldiers have been killed by hostile fire.
