ATLANTA (AP) - Vivian Malone Jones, one of two black students whose effort to enroll at the University of Alabama led to George Wallace's infamous ``stand in the schoolhouse door'' in 1963, was in critical condition Thursday at an Atlanta hospital.
Jones, who went on to become the first black to graduate from the school, was admitted to the Atlanta Medical Center on Tuesday. Adrienne Wade Hollis, a hospital spokeswoman, said Thursday that Jones was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Wade Hollis said she could not say why Jones was hospitalized. But television station WSB reported she had suffered a stroke.
Now in her early 60s, the retired federal employee lives in Atlanta.
