UN reform to take longer than a year: Bolton
UN reform to take longer than a year: Bolton
Fri Oct 14, 2005 12:39 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Reform of the United Nations will take longer than a year, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton said on Friday, expressing frustration with what he called the disappointing results of a recent summit of the world body.

Bolton, who put forward a barrage of more than 500 amendments before modest U.N. reforms were agreed last month, also said he did not know if a new human rights council -- to replace the widely criticised U.N. Human Rights Commission -- could be set up by year-end as Washington wants.

"I hoped we'd be finished with the establishment of the human rights council before the end of this year," Bolton, a staunch critic of the U.N. before his appointment as ambassador, told London's Royal Institute of International Affairs.

"I don't know whether we will succeed given the opposition to substantial change in the Human Rights Commission," he added.

2. Well! If they are going to be so, so DIFFICULT
we may have no choice but to withdraw from this hopelessly hide-bound ineffective organization!

4. Or standing in a corner and holding his breath until he turns purple
Somehow, temper tantrums don't impress people.

5. This Human Rights commission is the same one we got kicked off
in favor of Syria a few years ago?

So the commission is the problem, not us?

6. hey can put all the amendments he wants
My advice to the other delegates is to out vote them every single time. Give him the ostracizing treatment.

7. He's only got another, what, sixteen months, before he gets booted anyway.
All the UN has to do is wait until his temporary appointment runs out. By then, we'll control the house, and we'll nuke his sorry-ass nomination. If he's not already in jail by then.

9. Damn I thought Reuters was better than that... I expect bad reporting from
the MSM but Reuters just seemed to be giving him a podium to spout off there. How about mentioning the hypocrisy in Oil For Food as Bayoil, a U.S. based company was the largest benefactor in illegal Oil sales with the complicit approval of the Bush administration, as mentioned by Carl Levin during George Galloways appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee back in May? How long are we gonna have to put up with pure one sided bullshit from the main stream press. This is why America is doing so poorly these days. We are letting these assholes say anything and get away with it. Sad days indeed.
