MADEIRA BEACH - Liz Taylor opened her mother's mail last week to find two checks worth nearly $6,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The checks were written to Sandcastle Apartments, owned by Taylor's mother, for housing Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

But the two Madeira Beach units haven't housed any evacuees.

3. Some courageous Congressperson needs to begin an investigation
into practiced racism within the US Federal government. I know folks here will decry this suggestion as always playing the race card but look at the facts staring us in the face. On almost every level from healthcare to bank lending the system is so stacked against minorities that it is shameful. American born blacks suffer discrimination from not only the white majority but discrimination from newly arrived immigrants from Asia, South America, the Balkans, and Russia. We have much more in common culturally with American blacks and probably no group as loyal to America as American blacks yet we discriminate against them in ways unspeakable. And almost every preveiously discriminated-against group--women, Latinos, poor whites, Asians, Native Americans--have made huge civil rights gains thanks in large part to the civil rights movement begun by sourthern blacks and then these same groups themselves turn around and discriminate against blacks. Politics in this country is undergirded by systemic racism and it is used in very subtle ways to secure elections in various parts of the country. Corporations play on the racism they understand that marks their bottom line, politicians use it, religious organizations use it, law enforcement and the prison system is built upon it...there seems to be no way out for us. I guess it will ultimately be our undoing.
