White House Asks Judges to Vouch for Miers
This is getting to be obscene ..

WASHINGTON (AP) -

Stunned by conservative opposition to Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, President Bush next week will bring in former judges from her home state of Texas to trumpet her qualifications for the nation's highest court.

The event is part of an administration effort to refine its push for Miers after its initial strategy failed to quiet vocal opposition from members of the president's own party.

The Republican critics, who suggest Bush passed over candidates with long records of conservative rulings from the bench, say that if the White House strategy continues to amount to a "trust me" message, they'll continue to grumble.

On Friday, press secretary Scott McClellan repeatedly used the words "qualified" and "well-qualified" to defend Miers and said she deserved a fair hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Conservative opponents say emphasizing her resume is part of a retooled White House tack.

4. The lengths to which Bush is going...
to have Miers approved to the high scourt, is truly pathetic.
He is doing this not because she is the right person for the job (she isn't) but because he believes he will look like a wimp if he withdraws the nomination and opts for someone else.

* really has no clue as to the importance of the Supreme Court. It is not to support him and his policies. It has nothing to do with Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal, Christian or otherwise. It has to do with checks and balances to see that the other two branches of government dont get out of line and that all laws enacted are fair to everyone. But * is seeking exactly what he claims we shouldnt have....an activist court that will make sure we are conservative through and through.

I said * has no clue as to the role of the supreme court. By God, that man has no clue about just about everything. He puts forth a woman who's biggest experience was running a state lottery. She was never an actual judge, is not a scholar of constitutional law, and I wager her experince as a litigator is miniscule. Its like asking me, who never went to medicial school, to determine if a surgical procedure is effective or not. I wouldnt even attempt to make such a judgement because I care for the health of the patient. Ms Mier should care for the health of this country and back away from a job that is way over her head. Like * should have backed away in 2000 from his current job which is way over his head.

5. I'm not sure an endorsement from a Texan judge is so
compelling! :) Apologies to Texans on this board, but the Texas justice system doesn't seem so appealing to a lot of us. -K

She was an office manager and ran the lottery. There's not much there to hang your support on.

9. I guess I'm beyond thinking that this is some type of vast
Rovian conspiracy to draw attention away from other things. I just think they have no idea how to handle a crisis, and that is what Miers' nomination is turning into. And I especially do not think they know how to handle dissent among their ranks. Which must be infuriating to this current group of White House power brokers. More and more they're getting backed into a corner, and we all know what happens when animals get cornered....

Maybe he's just calling in some favors. But I think it shows how desperate things are looking for this nominee.

17. The best of comedy is right around the corner........
Can't wait for the hearings to start. Senators like Jeff Sessions and John Cornyn will be at their best if it goes that far, which I don't think it will.

Gonzales has already come out on national tv telling us how smart this lady is and how we should give her a chance.

* wanted a free pass on the USSC from someone far dumber than himself. Miers voabulary, prose and her never ending gushing of praise for the moron in chief makes her completely unworthy.

21. Judges Asked to Calm Furor Over Miers Nod
Judges Asked to Calm Furor Over Miers Nod

By JENNIFER LOVEN
The Associated Press
Saturday, October 15, 2005; 1:02 PM

WASHINGTON -- Two former Texas Supreme Court chief justices are the White House's latest weapon in the fight to calm the conservative uproar over Harriet Miers' nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

John Hill and Thomas Phillips are due in Washington on Monday, bringing testimonials about Miers' qualifications based on their dealings with her in Texas.

Despite his longtime support for George W. Bush, Hill is a Democrat whose word may not be the right salve for those among the Republican right most nervous about Miers' judicial philosophy.

Also, it was unclear whether either Hill or Phillips ever heard Miers argue the kind of cases that might rebut criticism that she lacks knowledge of constitutional issues.

22. John Hill is a partner in Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP,
Miers' law firm. Greenhill is employed by Baker & Botts, James Baker III's law firm. Phillips was formerly an attorney with Baker & Botts.
