U.S. ambassador says softwood should not spoil otherwise good relations
QUEBEC CITY (CP) - Quebec Premier Jean Charest says there are encouraging signs an end is in sight for the ongoing softwood lumber dispute with the United States.
Charest made the comments after meeting with U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins on Tuesday. Charest explained his optimism by saying that Wilkins had given him assurances the issue is being discussed at high levels within the U.S. administration.
He also said Prime Minister Paul Martin spoke with U.S. President George W. Bush over the phone on Friday.
