5. I'm sure there is a mistake in this report
They were probably just throwing more of those flowers Cheney and Perle were talking about, and the mayor pricked his finger on a thorn. You know how the liberal press exaggerates everything. Now the good news they NEVER tell you. A 7 year old child made it to school yesterday without being shot dead in the street. Democracy is on the march.

Isn't this a disturbing indicator of just how bad things are in Iraq? I mean, if you can't even ensure the safety of the mayor of the largest, most modern city.... Yikes.

19. hunh? Hatem Mirza Hamza? Who's that?
What happened to the other guy - Hussein al-Tahaan? You know, the Shiite dude that ousted mayor Alaa al-Tamimi in August...

Baghdad's mayor deposed and replaced with a Shiite
By James Glanz The New York Times

THURSDAY, AUGUST 11, 2005

BAGHDAD Armed men entered Baghdad's municipal building during a blinding dust storm, deposed the city's mayor and installed a member of Iraq's most powerful Shiite militia.

The deposed mayor, Alaa al-Tamimi, who was not in his offices at the time, recounted the events in a telephone conversation Tuesday and called the move a municipal coup d'état. He added that he had gone into hiding for fear of his life.

"This is the new Iraq," said Tamimi, a secular engineer with no party affiliation. "They use force to achieve their goal."

The group that ousted him insisted that it had the authority to assume control of Iraq's capital city and that Tamimi was in no danger. The man the group installed, Hussein al-Tahaan, is a member of the Badr Organization, the armed militia of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq.

33. Ah, thank you. I think you're right.
Lost in translation might be what's happened here. 'Baghdad municipalities’ president' could easily be confused with 'mayor'.

and thank you for the link.

While it may not be the Mayor of Baghdad and his driver who were killed, it's still two more deaths in the midst of this madness.

Y'know, the mayor's driving around with his bodyguard, gets stopped by a bunch of gunmen, runs for his life, and is shot to death. Very common occurrence in all American cities. When will the media stop reporting only the bad news?

Vidkun Quisling (July 18, 1887–October 24, 1945) was a Norwegian fascist politician and officer. He held the office of Minister President of Norway from February 1942 to the end of World War II, while the elected social democratic cabinet of Johan Nygaardsvold was exiled in London. Quisling was tried for high treason and executed by firing squad after the war. His name has become an eponym for traitor

The term "quisling" has become a synonym in some European languages, including English, Norwegian and Serbian, for traitor, particularly one who collaborates with invaders. The term was coined by the British newspaper the Daily Mail.
