Rice won't rule out U.S. troops in Iraq in 10 years

WASHINGTON-- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday refused to rule out U.S. troops still being in Iraq in 10 years or the possibility that the United States could use military force against neighboring Syria and Iran.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rice demurred to the decisions of President Bush and military commanders as Republicans and Democrats alike pressed her for more specifics on the U.S. strategy in Iraq.

Asked specifically whether the United States would have troops in Iraq in five or 10 years, Rice said: "I think that even to try and speculate on how many years from now there will be a certain number of American forces is not appropriate."

Lawmakers also pressed her on strategy for dealing with Iran and Syria. U.S. officials have accused Syria of allowing foreign fighters to flow across its borders into Iraq and Iran of supporting the insurgency.

42. Will ?
This is really old news.Half of these bases are already build.

The Chicago Tribune last March (2004) said US engineers are constructing 14 "enduring bases,".

Those 14 enduring base have been planned for day 1.

I'm surprised here on DU most people don't know about this.

47. I agree
That was the point wasn't it?

They will be out in the desert, however, and not particularly involved with the population, somewhat akin to the military presence in Okinawa. (Idea being that Okinawa is/was relatively rural and not too much a part of Japanese life.)

It's a knife at the throat of a nuclear Iran, et al. Period.

7. Under what circunstances would we completely withdraw?
I'm talking about all US military personnel out of Iraq, except for the standard embassy guard.

I don't see it happening, even under a Democratic president. Even if we get to the point where our troops are no longer continually engaged with patrolling the cities and battling insurgents, we're still going to have bases and advisors and strike forces, unless ...

... what would it take for a COMPLETE withdrawal?

don't want to leave behind and get the hell out of there. See the fall of Saigon in the 70's.

Why stay should be the question. We have no national defense reasons to stay other than to confiscate Iraq's national resources in order to enrich people who already have too much wealth and power.

10. She does PR for the Imperialists
She's an intelligent articulate black woman promoted to the highest foreign policy office in the land. Her gender and color preempt many of the attacks that would otherwise be directed at such a high-profile frontman for the neocons. When she politely and calmly answers questions on the newstalk programs, she sounds so reasonable that anyone who wasn't well-informed on the issues can be persuaded to her point of view.

She's very good at her job -- when it's defined as public relations for the neocon imperialists. But as far as serving the American people in her former job as National Security Advisor and current job as Secretary of State, she's an intrinsic part of the disaster that is the Bush administration.

16. Why are these wars of choice the PRESIDENT'S option!
Do the people who are going to fight the wars in Iran and Syria-- and pay for them-- get to have any say in the matter? Doesn't look like it!

Lawmakers also pressed her on strategy for dealing with Iran and Syria. U.S. officials have accused Syria of allowing foreign fighters to flow across its borders into Iraq and Iran of supporting the insurgency.

Rice said the United States was using diplomatic means to urge a change in the behavior of both countries-- but she stopped short of ruling out military force. "I'm not going to get into what the
president's options might be," Rice said. "I don't think the president ever takes any of his options off the table concerning anything to do with military force."

17. U.S. refuses to rule out military option on Syria
The United States on Wednesday refused to rule out possible military action against Syria but said it had not exhausted diplomatic moves to get Damascus to change its ways over Iraq and Lebanon.

Addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said both Syria and Iran were allowing fighters and military assistance to reach insurgents in Iraq.

"Syria and Iran must decide whether they wish to side with the cause of war or with the cause of peace," Rice told a hearing called to discuss U.S. strategy in Iraq, where more than 150,000 U.S. troops are struggling to end an insurgency.

26. The reason why we need effective political opposition in this country...
...is to make this mis-administration think HARD before they try to take us willy nilly into war. No more rubber stamp adventures in places like Iraq to fund the BushCo private coffers.

Our Dem elected officials need to wake up and acknowledge that their failure to stand up to the Bush Cabal has emboldened them to believe they can engage in grand adventures with our military around the world with no opposition. The only thing going along does is put our nation at risk from spreading our military into areas that are not a direct threat to us, and preventing them from protecting us from threats that do exist because they are engaged elsewhere.

After Iraq, I would need a LOT of solid, verifiable data before I would support this criminal administration in another war. Having a Bush minion spout that Syria is threating us is not enough, especially when said minion has ALREADY been proven to be totally lacking in credibility.

30. Syria and Iran are allowing stuff to cross the border?!?! WTF?!?!
You mean WE are allowing it. Don't we supposedly control one side of each of those borders? We don't? Is that Iran's fault? Is that Syria's fault?

Who decided how many troops we would need for GWB's little adventure in Iraq, anyway? Do we not have enough to control the borders ourselves? Are you saying we sent that insufficient number of troops (vastly less than experienced generals said we would need) counting on help from the friggin' Syrians and Iranians?

Who are we to criticize two foreign countries' inability to control their borders when we can't control our own southern border? Who are we to demand that they step up security as a favor to our soldiers?

This is bullshit as a reason to go to war. They'd better come up with something better than this to justify it if they want to invade Iran and Syria.

34. Yaaay, PNAC! Yaay Israel! Yaay, yaay yaay!
Michael Ledeen said that "'Every ten years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business."

Ever since the ascendance of Ronald Reagan, it's cool to be an asshole. We deserve to rule the world and only inferiors disagree with that. Losers need to get out of the way.

This is the secret of the modern American society: you may never admit weakness, and you must revel in your superiority. You won't lose your house as rates go up. Our economy isn't going to fail because of outsourcing. Rich people ARE being unfairly taxed. Poor people are lazy and don't deserve to live.

Bullying is the new soul of this country, and that's very sad. We used to be the land of hope, now we're the land of laughing superiority.

We tried to take Syria in the spring of '03, but we couldn't. Since we haven't got anywhere near the means to "do" Iran, we hope for the Israeli military to help us get rid of Syria. Since the PNAC is bent on world domination and has probably more loyalty to Israel than the United States, Syria's in a heap of trouble

41. What a remarkably stupid post!
Yes, PNAC is more loyal to Israel than the US? :eyes: Yes, Israel would just LOVE an unstable Syrian regime! :sarcasm: Yes, Israel is waiting for their master (that they actually control) to give them "go ahead!" :puke:

PNAC is loyal to OIL! PNAC is loyal to CORPORATIONS! PNAC is loyal to THEIR WALLETS!

Israel has been told to "let the US handle Syria." Israel doesn't need an unstable Syria! Israel is also KEENLY aware that an assault on Syria will draw in the other Arab nations (they all hated Saddam, so they didn't care about that little illegal venture).

You know, it gets REALLY OLD, how Israel is ALWAYS a willing accomplice and the reason we (the US) is always doing bad shit. Give it a rest!
