WASHINGTON — Roughly $125 million in grants is being awarded to 70 community colleges around the country, including Maine, to bolster job training.
The initiative announced by the Labor Department Wednesday sprang from President´s Bush 2004 State of the Union address. It is designed to help workers and jobseekers obtain the necessary skills to keep up with a dynamic labor market.
Given the devastation wrought by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the department said it gave a preference to community colleges in the Southeast and along the Gulf Coast that filed applications for a slice of the grant money. The department said training programs in the ravaged areas will be an important component to getting the regional economy back on its feet.
