Bush plot suspect claims torture
Bush plot suspect claims torture
From: Reuters From correspondents in Alexandria, Virginia
October 20, 2005

A US citizen charged with plotting to kill President George W. Bush said today Saudi officers chained him to the floor, blindfolded him and whipped him to make him talk.

In his testimony since returning to the United States in February to face a nine-count indictment, Ahmed Abu Ali said in court that he was beaten and whipped after being detained in Medina, Saudi Arabia, in June 2003.

"They chained me to the ground, and I was blindfolded," said Abu Ali, dressed in a green prisoner jumpsuit.

"My knees were on the ground ... my legs were shackled. They struck me many times. I had never felt any pain like it in my life."

His lawyers said the confessions should be thrown out because they were obtained by coercion, but the US government said there is no proof he has been tortured.

1. Can people remind me of how Saddam is worse than Bush?
After hearing about soldiers raping children (with pictures as proof) and people beaten until they throw up a torrent of blood and die, I feel my american spirit crumbling.

2. Sounds similar to the Richard Sampson case in Canada...
Only Sampson was accused of a bombing in Riyah. He was tortured over the course of his 2.5 years incarceration. He's now planning on suing the Saudi government.

5. the men in uniform are finally talking.... about how they were given no
guidelines, no limits, told to take their gloves off. and then get to hear how all of it was illegal, by the same people who encouraged it.

6. Judge to decide whether Abu Ali confession should be suppressed
ALEXANDRIA, Va. A federal judge must now decide whether a confession given to Saudi officials by a Falls Church man about his involvement with al-Qaida was coerced or if it should be allowed as evidence at his upcoming trial. <snip>

If the U-S district judge tosses the confession it's possible that the entire case could be dismissed. Prosecutors would also have the option of appealing the ruling.

A decision could come as early as tomorrow.
