Supporters mark 3-year confinement with protest rally

Saturday, October 22, 2005

Three years ago today, the FBI and Homeland Security arrested Ashraf Al-Jailani of Kent as a terror suspect.

To mark Al-Jailani's 1,095th day in jail, his supporters will hold "A Day of Remembrance For Hope and Human Rights for Al-Jailani" at the Islamic Community Center on Old Route 8 in Cuyahoga Falls at 2 p.m. today.

Though uncharged, Al-Jailani remains in a federal jail in York, Pa. He is resisting deportation to his native Yemen, where he believes he would be tortured or killed. In a ruling this week, the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals brought his deportation closer by ruling that his fear of torture in Yemen had no basis.

As a result, he could be deported by Nov. 16 if he does not appeal the decision to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. His lawyer said that Al-Jailani and his wife will determine if he should file an appeal or allow the deportation...
