Home quarantine for suspects (Australia)

Home quarantine for suspects
From: By Tony Vermeer

THOUSANDS of people could be confined to their homes by government order if a deadly influenza pandemic strikes Australia.

Home quarantine is being considered for anybody suspected of coming into contact with the virus even if they show no symptoms.
Under a disaster plan being developed by the New South Wales Government, emergency powers would be invoked to prevent suspected sufferers leaving their homes for several days.

They would be monitored by visiting health workers or by telephone contact. Other householders would have to wear masks and use separate dining, bathing, laundry and toilet facilities where possible.

The measure is seen as the most effective way of restricting the spread of a deadly influenza virus in the early stages of an outbreak.

<snip>
Governments are on alert because of fears the current strain of bird flu H5N1, now spreading across the globe, will mutate into a virus capable of being passed from human to human.

How do they know that this virus WILL mutate? Strange sentence there.

1. Take out the part between commas:
Governments are on alert because of fears the current strain of bird flu H5N1, now spreading across the globe, will mutate into a virus capable of being passed from human to human.

Governments are on alert because of fears the current strain of bird flu H5N1 will mutate into a virus capable of being passed from human to human.

The second instance is what it means.

4. Nothing wrong
There's nothing wrong with this sentence. What's with the grammer cops on DU anyway?

Governments are on alert because of fears the current strain of bird flu H5N1, now spreading across the globe, will mutate into a virus capable of being passed from human to human.

There is something wrong with the source though. There are way too many links to Right Wing Australian sites to my liking and there's no evidence about who runs the site.

5. A right-wing source, but
in Australia the degree of twisting and censorship from right-wing sources just doesn't compare with what you have to contend with in America. The information given in this article is correct, but the larger papers are ignoring it.

Although the idea of forcing any sort of quarantine is a bit abhorrent, if the bird flu does hit, it will be a necessary strategy to protect others. This is why people should be making sure from now on that they have supplies packed away to live on for a few weeks if it becomes necessary.

3. Not such a strange sentence
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 10:47 PM by Art_from_Ark
The key words are "fears that"... meaning that it is not a given, but a concern.

"There are fears that the hurricane will hit the Metro Area" is not the same thing as "The hurricane will hit the Metro Area"

7. Home prison power for bird flu victims
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,17011740%255E661,00.html

VICTORIAN health officials and police have sweeping powers to confine people in their homes and fine them $20,000 for breaching orders if a deadly flu pandemic strikes here.

People suspected of coming into contact with the virus or showing signs of being infected could be forced into home detention and have their movements restricted under the plan.
In extreme cases, police would be called in to arrest people who refuse to comply with orders and detain them in quarantine to control an outbreak.

Blood tests could be conducted on those suspected of carrying the virus, by force if necessary.

Victorian health authorities are also prepared to close schools or limit large gatherings to control its spread.

Now this is fascinating cause if a person was dying from the Bird Flu why would they give a bleep if they got fined 20,000 and how many police are around to arrest sick people!!!

This scare tactic is BS!!! they need something better than this!!!

11. Those Evil Brits?
This legislation is being brought into Australia, by Australians. You may rest assured that "Those evil Brits" have nothing whatsoever to do with it.

If the word "Victorian" confuses you, in this case it refers to a geographical location, a south-eastern state in Australia, not an era in time.

 :spank:

13. New Zealand announced a similar policy last year
as part of its pandemic contingency preparations.

Bottom line is that healthcare capacity will be quickly overwhelmed, and there'd be no way for hospitals and makeshift clinics to treat all of the cases, so they've basically been up front with their citizens and told them that many who were too ill or would otherwise not benefit from treatment would have to stay home (quite possibly to die).

The government mentioned (at the time) that they'd have to enforce it- and as I recall their press release went into a little detail about how that would have to be done.

The current plan stops short of mentioning that, but it's probably taken by the sensible members of the population as a given.

I'm sure you don't mean this seriously. Is it based on something here that I've missed?
