NYT/AP: Looting Breaks Out in Mexico After Wilma
Looting Breaks Out in Mexico After Wilma

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) -- Mexicans and stranded tourists, hungry and frustrated after a two-day beating by Hurricane Wilma, stood in line to buy supplies Sunday or simply raided grocery or furniture stores, dragging goods from shops ripped open by the storm.

The hurricane's steady march toward southern Florida meant an end here to two days of howling winds and torrential rains that shattered windows, peeled away roofing and sent the ocean crashing into hotel lobbies. The sun emerged over Mexico's sugar-white Caribbean beaches.

But another kind of chaos took over, as police shot into the air to scare looters away from a shopping center, and looters responded by throwing rocks and chucks of concrete.

Downtown, officials feared looters would turn on tourists, so they quickly evacuated more than 30 foreigners from a downtown area overrun by people raiding stores. Military officials and police stood guard outside businesses and set up checkpoints to seize stolen goods.

''It's chaos,'' said fire official Gregorio Vergara. ''They are taking things all over the city.''...

1. Finding vs Looting
Of course the tourists are standing in line, with money in hand, but the brown people are "looting"?? Come on AP, desperate situations demand desperate "solutions"..

White people will loot too, if they cannot get what they need in other ways..

I'm about to have my dinner.

"Looting" things like water, batteries for radios so they can know what is going on, canned foods...

Not this corporate media shit again.

There ought to be a law that requires all upper middle class people to live for a month in conditions of poverty.

because of the problem of haves and have-nots.

I bet many US cities would have a rooting problem when a natural disaster strikes.

7. I hope the Mexican govt. take Bush advice about shooting them
This seems to be a universal trait. Anytime a disaster strikes and food is scarce, people will loot to survive. It's human nature. However, in America, racist conservatives make it a racial issue as if non-whites are a bunch savages therefore they must have guns to protect their property.

And it also seems as if Bush has started a new trend of "benign neglect." They rather see poor people die instead of helping them. The thug leader in Pakistan is using it too.

Anyone read Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men"?

9. well, duh! The poor and hungery "loot", the wealthy "find"
Thinking about...
New Orleans
Cancun

What do they have in common? Poor people of "color" getting what they need to survive. Authorities more worried about property than people. Hmmm.

(I never did get this color thing; I am not white, I am a light pinky-beige. If I were "white" I probably would have been dead and floating in water for too long.)
