Activists kept from intervening in suit
A Superior Court judge has denied a request by four civil-rights groups to intervene in a lawsuit that challenges Capistrano Unified's boundary- drawing process.
The ACLU Foundation of Southern California, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Asian Pacific Legal Center and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund wanted to back a group of parents that opposes the lawsuit.
The judge ruled Friday that the groups' interests are adequately represented by the district.
San Clemente father Michael Winsten and the group Neighborhood Schools for Our Kids teamed with the Pacific Legal Foundation in June to challenge the high school boundaries, saying the district's consideration of race in drawing the lines violates Proposition 209.
