US military says attack at Palestine Hotel was a 'signature al-Qaida attack'

BAGHDAD, Iraq The U-S military says yesterday's suicide bombings in Iraq were "a signature al-Qaida attack."

Brigadier General Don Alston says the attack is still being investigated. But Alston says the success of the constitutional referendum is a threat to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (AH'-boo MOO'-sahb ahl-zahr-KOW'-ee). He says it's another step toward democracy and "ultimately would spell failure" for al-Zarqawi's plans for the country.

Alston also says it wasn't a surprise that the attackers targeted the Palestine Hotel, where many foreign journalists are staying. He says they knew the attack would get immediate media coverage.

3. The US also attacked the Palestine Hotel.

Not only does the White House have legal problems at home with the pending indictments of the inner circle, but Bush himself faces serious long-term legal problems on an international scale: The Associated Press has reported that:

A (Spanish) judge has issued an international arrest warrant for three U.S. soldiers whose tank fired on a Baghdad hotel during the Iraq war, killing a Spanish journalist and a Ukrainian cameraman, a court official said Wednesday.

This may not sound like much today, but it sets a precedent. How much longer before courts start issueing warrants for the people who ordered that tank to fire on the Baghdad hotel? How long before an international court issues warrants against the people who ordered the illegal invasion of Iraq in the first place?

I expand on this point here:

8. Al Qaida claims responsibilty for hotel attack
Agencies
Baghdad: The Al Qaida in Iraq organization has claimed responsibility for the triple bomb attack on a Baghdad hotel complex which claimed the lives of 15 people.

A statement posted on the internet said: "Despite all (the security), our group managed to carry out reconnaissance in the area and gather information...break through the barriers.”

It said the attacks were carried out by two teams, one of which clashed with guards after targeting them with missiles, allowing one militant to infiltrate the heavily guarded compound.

The statement said other team members escaped.

12. yesterday I heard....
Dr Laura saying that maybe those reporters will finally get a clue who the real 'bad' guys are, now. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the US were behind it. How many reporters have we picked off already? I'm still dying to know what 'good' news about Iraq those reporters are suppressing. Wasn't that the rallying cry a few weeks ago the the mainstream media refused to report all the big successes that have occurred over there. I'm pretty sure that every city and town has brand new homes with refrigerators, TVs, and new furniture. All the kids go to school, have health care, and and new clothes. Everyone has a car and a job. There must be Wallmarts springing up daily. Isn't that what freedom means... you make a lot of money and get to buy a bunch of new shit?
