U.S.'s Snow-extend tax breaks to boost economy

WASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow on Wednesday urged Congress to extend expiring tax cuts and control spending to promote economic growth and create jobs.

"It would be exactly the wrong time, as some have proposed, to raise taxes," he said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Center for National Policy.

"Spending control, combined with lower tax rates, and a simpler, more pro-growth tax code, are a potent reform recipe for jobs, growth, and higher incomes," he said.

Snow also said President George W. Bush wants regulatory overhaul of government-sponsored mortgage finance enterprises (GSEs) to include caps on GSE mortgage portfolios.

2. We tried that
and all it does it help prop up the stock market. It grows the deficit, doesn't get people back to work (except in Asia) and doesn't raise the standard of living for the vast majority of Americans. We tried your weird-ass voodoo economics. Now let's quit trying to be Santa Clause and do something that makes some fricking sense and doesn't rely on some half-assed Ronald Reagan smoke and mirrors.

4. Just one question.....
How do we afford tax cut given 1) a record deficit and 2) the occupation of Iraq?

5. Giving more money to filthy rich people will NOT help the economy...
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 12:59 PM by Triana
...trickle-down didn't work with Ray Gun and it won't work now.

Get more money to people who don't have any or who have little. THAT will boost the economy. That means NOT cutting spending on Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, programs for the poor, after-school programs, jobs programs, or education and it DOES mean RESCINDING the damned tax cuts for the rich to pay for it and also to pay for the move to renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.

Idiots.

We need to RAISE taxes on the rich and send them and their kids to Iraq and Syria to fight the reichwingnuts' endless wars. THEY ought to do their part to support this society and this government instead of the poor and middle class doing it ALL.

17. Exactly. How do you think the landowners vs the serfs is going to
come about? Soon the 1% getting the tax breaks will own all our property.

6. Here is how tax cuts affect a middle-class person
Namely me.

I just got my property tax notice. My taxes have gone up 25% in 1 year, all thanks to these f*ckers' tax policies and policies that encourage the faux "increase" in property values.

This tax increase more than swallows up any (meager) salary increase I got this year.

11. Don't you people "get" it??
Everyone keeps saying "...well, this didn't work before..." or other such rot.

THEY DON'T CARE IF IT WORKS OR NOT. They'd just as soon it DIDN'T.

They have 2 and only 2 priorities:

1. Fill their pockets while there is still something left to steal, and...

2. Drown the baby.

That's it. When you try to make sense of it, you're buying into their bullshit. They don't really believe tax cuts for rich people and more spending cuts on programs for the needy so they can make more tax cuts for rich people.

Get it? It's about stealing money. Nothing else. Period.

Easy isn't it, when you think about it for a second.

they want to have the ability not to own just things, they want the ability to own people.

12. funnel more tax money to corporations.
this is what's happened since the 00 election -- tax cuts for the wealthy and more contracts to corporations who don't do the job, no bid contracts for jobs we hire out for, take tax money targeted for the middle class and poor and give it to the wealthy, etc.

and generally speaking make sure that government doesn't work so you can blame somebody else.

republicans are pigs at a trough -- pure and simple.

"Spending control, combined with lower tax rates, and a simpler, more pro-growth tax code, are a potent reform recipe for jobs, growth, and higher incomes,"

Spending Control? When has a Republican even been familiar with this term?

16. Tax breaks for the rich do not work in a global economy.
The may never have worked in the first place but they sure do not now when the rich just take the money and invest it in foreign ventures instead of keeping it in the United States.

19. 'I'm John Snow and I'm filthy rich and I think we should extend the cuts'
Yeah.. a guy like Snow WOULD want the cuts.

As the fuckers have just cut 10 bill from health care for the poor and disabled, they've cut student loans, foster parent organizations, etc. etc. etc.

Now HOW much are we spending in Iraq monthly?

And did anyone else hear the CONSERVATIVE guy talking on Al Franken's show about the duffel bags FULL of money we handed out in Iraq to the tune of what.. millions? billion? I just can't get my head around keeping the tax cuts, paying BILLIONS beyond what the fucking war should have cost, and the fact that they're screwing the poor and middle class and elderly and children and disabled once again. Guess the GOP NEVER wants to be elected again.
