Mother of slain US soldier arrested in Iraq war protest - AFP

Excerpt:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US police arrested Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq who has become a prominent war opponent, along with two dozen people for demonstrating without authoritization in front of the White House.

Sheehan and the other protestors staged a "die-in" in front of the the White House, lying on the ground to symbolize US soldiers killed in Iraq.

Several dozen sympathizers applauded as Sheehan and others were taken away, while counter-protestors booed the group.

"Cindy Sheehan has been arrested with about 25 other people because she was demonstrating without a permit in front of the White House," said lieutenant Phil Beck of the US Park Police.

"They laid down on the sidewalk without a permit, they were advised three times to leave the area, they chose not to leave therefore they were arrested," Beck said.

"Most of them will probably be released tonight," he said. They face a 75 dollar fine.

Gnashes teeth...tears clothing...mews pathetically...

Pathetic isn't it?

3 FULL years before the election, people are already picking someone to blame for losing it...and that someone seems to be Cindy Sheehan.

How big of a loser do you have to be to "pre-blame" someone like Cindy for your loss BEFORE you even lose?

The mind tetters...

We can't just stop the War. It will take time and more lives. It was a mistake, but now we are involved. She has made a strong effort at drawing attention to the need to get out, but She has no real plan for getting out. Now she is attacking Dems who support the war. This keeps her in the news cycle. Little more. Go home.

97. This IS her way of dealing with the pain!
Where do you get off telling people how they should mourn the loss of a child? Crickey mate! Her son was TAKEN from her in order to help * and cronies make more money, and get more oil.

And quite frankly I don't blame her for attacking Dems who supported the war. I have seen many on the left attacking Dems who supported the war. So why does Cindy get attacked (by so called lefties) for it?

Maybe if more people would get off their asses (rather than complaining) and actually get out there and do what Cindy is doing, it might just wake the Dems up and turn them back into a true opposition party. Could you just imagine the Dems faces if 10,000 or 20,000 lefties were arrested for standing with Cindy?

100. she is dealing with her pain
not everyone sits around and cries all day and watches soap operas to forget what is going on. The only way to stop this war is to keep putting emphasis on the human aspect and I applaud her in all her efforts.

I imagine I know how she feels. I feel so impotent that I want to take a megaphone and read news to the fools sleepwalking in our town.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are close to the age of draft, get down on your knees and thank this woman for her courage, because she just might keep you alive.

My final thoughts. If you think this doesn't help, you do something.

Why not get out the same way we got in? Just leave. Go silently. Sort of like "shock and awe" in reverse.

I don't understand these "no plan to get out" or "we can't just leave" arguments. It appears we had no plan for what to do when we got there or for "achieving the peace," so why do we need a plan now? We lied our way in, so let's just "truth" our way out.

84. I'll just say this....
ANY parent who loses a child feels a type of grief that most people can not even imagine. In this case Cindy chose to turn that pain into something positive, to make a difference. I think to question her motives is shameful. It sounds very cliche but if what she's doing saves even one life, then I say let her have all the publicity she can handle!

129. I get so tired of seeing the same ridiculous idea
over and over and over. A mother who has lost a son doesn't give a DAMN about publicity for herself. Cindy Sheehan may be seeking publicity, but it is publicity for the anti-war movement that she accidentally became a leader of, and that has grown exponentially because of her.

You can't possibly have a child or children, or you couldn't think that. You couldn't know, I guess, that losing a child is supposed to be the worst thing that can happen to a person in their life. I am a parent, and I cannot imagine wanting to live if I lost a child.

The fact that this remarkable woman has been able to take her personal loss and turn the small anti-war movement into a huge one, is amazing to me. I can't imagine ever having the courage or strength to do what she has done. Frankly, I'm in awe of her.

Publicity for WHAT? What are you insinuating? What the hell is she "just seeking publicity" for? I'll tell you, in the event you don't know: SHE WANTS TO END THE ILLEGAL, IMMORAL WAR that is killing other parent's sons and daughters each and every day we're in it.

I hope she continues to seek and find "publicity" until she's successful in her endeavor. Don't you?

10. I don't think the war was based on lies
I think it was based on honest mistakes made by Dems and Reps. I don't think we can just bail out on it. I think it will take time to get out. It is a mess. It is useless to scream about getting out, without a plan. Cindy has made her feelings known. She doesn't want us fighting a war for Israel. Ok, I get it, but now go home and take care of your grieving family. Don't start attacking HRC to keep yourself in the news cycle.

The bush* admin knew the document from Niger was a forgery. They used it as a basis for war anyway. This war was based on forged documents and false accusations.

You do know that it's illegal to wage war for regime change, don't you?

How about the IAEA for starts?

There was no evidence that there were WMD's in Iraq, not that there weren't.

As for how we leave... We load up the troops and bring them home. Enough is enough, we don't need to lose any more soldiers for bush's* war.

Why is it that so many people believe that only we "white boys" have the ability to take care of the problems caused by our invasion of Iraq?

Are they so arrogant as to believe the people who live there cannot settle this among themselves?

70. The Invasion of Iraq was built on lies. The world knew it.
My middle-aged office droid pals knew it. Bush needed to be a "popular wartime leader" & Cheney needed more money for his Halliburton buddies.

There's already a war in Iraq. What can we do to help? Haven't we already done enough?

109. With all due respect, you're not doing anything but regurgitating
already refuted Republican talking points. You've offered no evidence to back your claims so far.

You know the funny thing about civil wars is that they're never formally announced as such. If we weren't involved in Iraq at the moment, we'd be calling the infighting a civil war. Funny, huh?

We've decimated their country, raped their culture and murdered their families. Yet they still haven't shown any signs of giving in to our great military powers. They just keep right on killing us as if we were trying to impose our will on their country. What makes you think that after the next 1,000 of our soldiers die they're going to change their minds and stop fighting for what they believe in? This can and will go on forever if it's not stopped. The only way to stop it is to admit it was a mistake and pull out. Or we can continue to wring our hands at the mess we've created and pretend there's a pretty solution as we sit safe and sound in our nice homes while people continue to die on both sides from our interference.

Where I live I've seen far too many misinformed people. The one thing I know is that when they are sincerely just misinformed they are willing to learn. If you're open to facts about the illegal war that's being waged by our country, I'll be more than happy to discuss the issue with you and enlighten you.

If you're one of those people who simply refuses to see the stinking butt that's being shoved in your face, let me know so I don't waste either of our time.

54. Did you catch the senate intel hearings into the intelligence?
Just before the first round ended (where they agreed not to pursue the WHYS of the funky intel - but Roberts promised a later batch of hearings after the elections... and then declared no need) - there was one little item of keen interest surrounding the NIE.

The NIE that was originally prepared at the request of a Senator (highly unusual that one wasn't prepared for the WH before pushing for the invasion as a means to force inspections) was seen and much of the intel listed had caveats included - that is cautionary words when it referred to specualtion, or footnotes on items indicating that intel agents couldn't verify x or y. Yet the version that was presented to congressmembers - had ALL of the caveats stripped out. The question was asked - at whose request was the report changed to appear much more dire and quite misleading? There was no answer.

Therefor the intel the WH had to push for the war was very different than the intel presented to congress - those voting for the IWR were given intentionally misleading information.

113. BS BS BS. There was absolutely no evidence of WMD. Never any.
Who was fooled and by what. What evidence has been shown that convinced the nitwits to vote for a war. The amounts of weapons that Bush said they had would be absolutely impossible to hid. We had no satellite photos no nothing. What is this mysterious evidence that existed then that made "us" think there were weapons. Some of us were standing in the streets yelling "don't believe George. He will and he is lying."
As far as "how do we get out now?" we withdraw as soon as possible. There never will be a good time. Didn't you learn anything from Vietnam?
The middle east has been unstable for centuries, for thousands of years before we ever thought of democracy. It will be unstable for thousands more years. Democracy will never survive in the middle east. I don't think it is surviving in this Country.

lies

totally unAmerican to support and advocate torture

there is nothing positive about the Iraq war.....women are MUCH worse off than before; 100,000 + Iraqis are dead.....etc etc etc

This war was about accomplishing a Neo-con agenda for a permanent US presence in the middle east. This war was about making money for the big money Republicans (oil and military manufacturers). What right do you have to tell Cindy how to live her life? I support her right to do what she feels she needs to do to protest this war.

29. Oh really? Have you lost a child recently? Had one murdered?
I've met Cindy Sheehan, and let me tell you, she is strong, she is genuine, and her heart has been shattered in a million pieces by the death of her son Casey.

I've met her other kids, and read the poem her daughter left at Arlington West a few short months after Casey died. Their family was shattered in a million pieces by the death of their brother Casey.

Cindy didn't break up her marriage, and she didn't break up her family. The war based on lies did that for her when her son was killed for no damn reason except the Bush Cabal's hubris and lust for power.

I've met Cindy Sheehan, and I can tell you she would give anything in the world to have her son back. Anything.

But since her child is never coming home again she is doing everything humanly possible to stop anyone else's child from being murdered in Bush's War.

FYI -- many families break apart when a child dies. Just a fact.

Hekate

It's not very progressive-minded to say that a woman should be minding the homefires instead of speaking up (and speaking out) in our society.

I'm behind Cindy and this energized peace movement 110%!

I appreciate her efforts to end this war so that another family does not lose their beloved child.

NO ONE has a right to harass or stifle this woman who has make the greatest sacrifice!

I knew I should have stayed in DC. The wife threatened to divorce me if I didn't come back though. Someone needs to start a massive "Civil disobedience fund" (rich hollywood liberals are you listening?) so we can start doing this en masse and people can afford to lose time from work without starving. Unless we get some miracle full house sweep from plamegate the chimp will still be in charge and we'll still be in iraq I assure you. The fight for peace and justice is going to have to be waged on many fronts.

We can bag her for doing what we wouldn't dare to do ourselves.

We can turn our backs on her for not doing it the way we think we would have done it if we'd done anything at all.

Or we can lend our support to one humble, hurting woman who is trying to do something to help the world.

62. We have a lot of photographers to thank. :-)
I wanted to get across her very "ordinariness", because this is what gives us a reason to hope for America. America is full of Cindis, it's just a matter of each person finding it within themselves to stand up and say, "This is enough, I will NOT take it any more."
It's a matter of respecting our fellow Cindis, wherever they appear.

The problem in America now is not just the bunch of rogues who stole a place at the helm. It's the far reaching effects of the culture of greed and lust and materialism. It's the notion that power and possessions equal self-worth, so that even a few people on this board feel free to ridicule others for not not being what they consider successful.

We need to get back to a culture of kindness. We need to assume that everyone we meet deserves respect until they prove otherwise. We need to each make ourselves into someone who other people can talk to, and can ask for help. We need to each find the core of our own being, the place where our ideals and beliefs are rooted.

When you can say: "I will," or "I won't," from this place deep within your soul, circumstances seem to work along with you, to help enable you to keep your word. This is the Magic of Mothers, because the stresses of Motherhood are one of the surest ways to bring this out in a person.

That would bring a big old smile to my face. But alas, they can't even get 1,000 people to our nation's capital to support it in a legal rally. Wonder why?

But I'm sure they stayed on the street or Lafayette Park where it is legal to stand with a sign. It's the sidewalk itself, right in front of the WH, that is illegal.
